Keel Laying Of Two Multi-Purpose Vessel Project
- The Keel laying ceremony of the two ships of the Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) Project (Yard18001 – Samarthak & Yard 18002 – Utkarsh) was held at L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli, on 20 Mar 23. The ceremony was presided by VAdm Sandeep Naithani, Chief of Materiel, in the presence of VAdm Kiran Deshmukh, CWP&A, Shri Ashok Khetan, Head Shipbuilding Business, L&T, and other senior officials from Indian Navy and L&T. The contract of construction of two Multi-Purpose Vessels was concluded with L&T Shipyard on Mar 22, in consonance with ‘Aatmarnirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives of the Government of India. These are the first Indian Navy Warships being constructed by L&T, Kattupalli.
- All major machinery, auxiliary equipment, and systems for the Multi-Purpose Vessels will be sourced from indigenous manufacturers. This will provide further impetus to defence production and employment generation within the country. These vessels, once delivered to the Indian Navy, will perform multi-role support functions such as maritime surveillance, patrolling, disaster relief, and launching expendable targets for exercises. These ships would also be deployed for operating autonomously / remotely operated / unmanned vessels.

- Since India is the G20 chair this year and simultaneously Japan holds the current G7 presidency, PM Modi said “Today’s meeting is is a great opportunity to work together keeping the self-goals of both nations in mind.”
- During the meeting, both sides discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the role of the India-Japan partnership in fostering peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

India Can Achieve Energy Independence By 2047: US Report
- India, the world’s fifth largest economy, can achieve energy independence through clean technology by 2047, a report of top research institute said, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat push that spans from a massive renewable capacity addition to electric mobility, saving billions of dollars in imports.
- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a federally funded research and development centre, along with The India Energy and Climate Center (IECC) located at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy published a report, ‘Pathways to Atmanirbhar Bharat’, that highlights the steps taken by India towards the adoption of clean energy.
- India is 80-85 per cent dependent on imports to meet its oil and coal needs. The price and supply volatility in global energy markets, as witnessed in recent years, strain India’s foreign exchange reserves, resulting in economy-wide inflation.
- However, recent dramatic declines in clean energy costs provide India an opportunity to lower energy imports through investment in renewable energy, battery storage, EVs, and green hydrogen, the report said.

- The second edition of AFINDEX will enable the participating contingents to hone their tactical skills, drills and procedures in joint operations for peacekeeping under United Nations mandate.
- The inaugural edition of AFINDEX was held at the FTN in March 2019. India has been one of the biggest contributors of troops to the UN Peacekeeping Operations all over the world and the Indian Army is also considered to be one of the expert agencies in mine removal operations.
