DRDO Carries Out Successful Flight Trials of HEAT
- Four flight trials of High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) – ABHYAS were successfully carried out by DRDO from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha during January 30 to February 02, 2024.
- The trials were conducted with four different mission objectives in a revised robust configuration using a single booster designed by Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad to provide reduced launch acceleration.
- The systems tested recently were realised through Production Agencies – Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Defence. With identified production agencies, ABHYAS is ready for production. The system has export potential and can be offered to friendly countries.
Rashtriya Raksha University & Assam Rifles Sign An MoU
- An MoU was signed between Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) and the Assam Rifles in Rashtriya Raksha University, Gujarat. The MoU was signed by Dr. Bimal N Patel, Vice Chancellor, RRU on behalf of RRU and Lt Gen PC Nair Director General Assam Rifles signed it on behalf of Assam Rifles.
- The MoU will accredit the academic and training programme of the Assam Rifles and provide certification to various courses which will facilitate training in undertaking studies, dissertations, and doctoral research as per university guidelines and encourage joint research initiatives, faculty exchange, and collaborative projects that will benefit both the entities, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated in a press release.
Saudi Companies To Make Parts For Lockheed’s THAAD
- U.S. weapons maker Lockheed Martin has signed agreements for Saudi Arabian companies to manufacture parts of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, the company said on Monday.
- These sub-contracts will enhance manufacturing capabilities in Saudi Arabia and transfer expertise to strengthen the country’s defence industry, Lockheed said in a statement.
- State-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) signed 11 agreements at the Saudi defence show in Riyadh, according to the country’s state news agency.
- The contracts come at time of rising tension in the region as some shipping companies suspended transit along the busy Red Sea route to avoid being attacked by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi group.
US Awards Contract Worth USD 68.4 Million To Taiwan
- The United States Department of Defence has recently allocated a contract worth USD 68.4 million to an American company for the construction of 50 advanced air-to-ground missiles slated for delivery to Taiwan over the next four years.
- These missiles, an integral component of an arms sale package sanctioned by Washington in June 2017, are intended for deployment on Taiwan’s fleet of F-16V fighter jets to bolster their long-range strike capabilities, according to a release on the website dated Feb. 2.
- As part of the 68.4 million USD contract under the aegis of the DoD, a division of the American aerospace and defence conglomerate RTX Corp. will manufacture the 50 Joint Standoff Weapon Air-to-Ground Missiles for distribution to Taiwan’s government within a four-year timeline, according to the announcement.
Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi appointed as next Vice Chief of Army Staff
- Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff. He is presently heading the Northern Army Command and will be taking over on February 15.
- Lieutenant General Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, National Defence Academy, and Indian Military Academy. He has held many important positions in his career. Lt Gen was commissioned into the 18th Battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in December 1984. Later, he commanded in the Kashmir Valley and the deserts of Rajasthan.
- He commanded his battalion in the Kashmir Valley, Assam Rifles Sector along the Indo-Myanmar Border, Inspectorate General Assam Rifles (IGAR, East). He also had the honour of commanding the prestigious Rising Star Corps.
- Meanwhile, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar has been appointed as the new Northern Army Commander. He is succeeding Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi who is moving to Army Headquarters as VCOAS.
