MoD Approves Acquisition of 15 Maritime Aircraft

  • The Defence Ministry has approved a proposal to procure nine maritime surveillance aircraft for the Indian Navy and six maritime patrol aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard, reported ANI quoting people aware of the development.
  • The proposed acquisition involves the construction of 15 maritime patrol planes, which will be based on the domestically manufactured C-295 transport aircraft.
  • This move aligns with the government’s “Make in India” initiative, aiming to enhance indigenous defence production capabilities while meeting the country’s security needs.
  • The estimated value of these projects stands at a whopping ₹29,000 crore, reported ANI.
  • These new additions to the Indian Navy and ICG fleets are expected to enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and patrol capabilities.

DAC Clears Capital Acquisition Proposals Worth Rs 84,560 Crore

  • Defence Acquisition Council under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, accorded approval for Acceptance of Necessity for various capital acquisition proposals amounting to Rs 84,560 crore.
  • In the true spirit of ‘Aatmanirbharta’, the approvals accorded on February 16, 2024, lay special emphasis on procurement of various equipment from Indian vendors.
  • AoN has also been accorded for procurement of Heavy Weight Torpedoes for enhancing the attacking capabilities of Kalvari Class submarines. The AoN for sustainment support through Follow On Support and Repair Replenishment support through Follow On Supply Support for 24 MH60R aircraft under Foreign Military Sale route with the US Government has also been accorded.

Inauguration of Facilities At NCS Delhi

  • Mrs Kala Hari Kumar, President, Navy Welfare and Wellness Association inaugurated the refurbished Computer Lab and Conference Room as well as a new Lift for Children with Special Needs at Navy Children School Delhi on 15 February 2024.
  • ‘Param’, the Computer Lab for senior classes designed to accommodate 40 students is equipped with state-of-the-art furniture, learning charts and upgraded hardware. The Conference Room ‘Mantrana’, with provision to connect all naval schools would facilitate faculty development programs and online academic interactions among children.

Indian Private Industry Delegation Visits Philippines

  • An Indian delegation is currently in the Philippines to showcase homegrown military technologies and equipment and explore defence industry tie-ups to bolster Manila’s defence modernization.
  • The delegation includes representatives from companies such as DCM Shriram Industries Ltd, Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Mahindra Emirates Vehicle Armouring FZ LLC, MKU Limited, and Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited.
  • Their offerings range from aircraft, drones, and helicopters to artificial intelligence-based technologies. India remains committed to assisting the Philippines in enhancing its defence capabilities, and the offer of a Line of Credit (LoC) to support Manila’s defence modernization still stands.

U.S. Passes QUAD Bill

  • The United States House of Representatives passed the ‘Quad Bill’ which aims to establish a working group for bolstering cooperation between the partner countries.
  • The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, also known as the Quad, is a coalition comprised of the United States, Japan, Australia and India.
  • This bill directs the US State Department to seek to establish a working group with Japan, Australia, and India to facilitate closer cooperation on shared interests and values.
  • The strategy shall address cooperation on issues including; preparing for the next pandemic, co-developing new innovative technologies, and deepening economic engagement and integration, according to the US House of Representatives website.
