Earlier this year, the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) announced a collaboration on the development of a High-Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Class UAV at Aero India.
Specifications of the UAV
This UAV will be powered by a turboprop engine with a thrust of 940hp and will be configured as a pusher. The predicted specs include a total weight of 5 tonnes and an endurance of more than 25 hours. The design configuration for the HALE UAV is scheduled to be finalised later this year. Once the programme is approved, detailed work will begin, and the engineering tendering procedure for the prototype will most likely begin next year. The team hopes to have the UAV operational by late 2025.
The HALE Class UAVs are intended to be used for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance. To address specific requirements, variants specialised for the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy will be created. The experience and technology obtained during the development of the Medium-Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) TAPAS and Archer-NG (UCAV) programmes will be applied to this programme, ensuring a streamlined and efficient execution.
TAPAS MALE UAV
TAPAS-BH is a MALE UAV with an operational altitude of 30000 feet, a 24-hour endurance with EO and SAR payloads, and a range of 250 kilometres. It can handle a range of payloads weighing up to 350 kg. Rustom-2 is a platform built for Indian Armed Forces Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions. Its purpose requires it to offer continuous wide-area coverage while also identifying small targets. Rustom-II is comparable to IAI’s HERON in the same class.
