For fighter-sized targets, ERADS will feature an ERSAM (Extended Range Surface to Air Missile) Interceptor missile with a range of 150 km, and for Force Multiplier size targets like AWACS/FRA, an XRSAM (eXtra Long Range Surface to Air Missile) Interceptor missile with a range of 250 km. Because of its ability to engage and neutralize aerial targets at long range, ERADS is often referred to as the Indian S-400 Air Defence system. It has been in development for several years and will incorporate technology from the MR-SAM and AD-1 Anti-Ballistic Interceptor missiles.

About ERADS (Extended Range Air Defence Systems)

The Defence Research and Development Organization is developing an Indian long-range mobile surface-to-air missile defence system known as ERADS (Extended Range Air Defence Systems).

It will supplement the Indian armed forces’ Indo-Israeli Barak 8 and Russian S-400 missile systems. The missile system could be used to bridge the 70-kilometer gap between the MR-SAM and the S-400 (400 km). The missile system will have a range of 250 kilometers against fighter jets, 350 kilometers against cruise missiles, sea-skimming anti-ship missiles, AWACS, and mid-air refuelers, and will be capable of bringing down ballistic missiles and stealth fighters in a terminal stage. The missile’s naval version could be developed to supplement the Indian Navy’s LR-SAM missile.
