On June 30, 2023, Indian Naval ships INS Rana, a guided missile destroyer, and INS Sumedha, an indigenously built offshore patrol vessel, participated in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with French Navy ship FS Surcouf in the Bay of Bengal.

Surcouf, a French Navy La Fayette class frigate, visited Visakhapatnam from June 26 to 29, 2023, and participated in various events with Indian Navy ships, including professional and social exchanges, sports fixtures, and cross-deck visits.
After leaving Visakhapatnam, FS Surcouf participated in a number of drills with IN ships Rana and Sumedha, including tactical manoeuvres, replenishment at sea (RAS) approaches, air defence against fighter aircraft, and cross-deck helicopter operations. The MPX concluded with a customary farewell steam past between the ships, emphasising the two navies’ close alliance. The visit of FS Surcouf to India demonstrates the strong navy-to-navy linkages, interoperability, and strong bonds between the Indian and French navies.
Earlier this year, the frigate FS La Fayette and the Mistral-class amphibious assault ship FS Dixmude participated in an MPX with the guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri from March 10 to 11, 2023.
