The 10th edition of the annual Indian Navy-Sri Lanka Navy bilateral maritime exercise SLINEX-2023 is set to begin on April 3rd in Colombo. The exercise is divided into three-day phases: the Harbour and Sea phases. INS Kiltan and INS Savitri will represent the Indian Navy, while SLNS Vijayabahu and SLNS Samudura will represent the Sri Lanka Navy. The exercise would also include Indian Navy Chetak, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and Sri Lanka Air Force Dornier and BEL 412 helicopters. The two Navy Special Forces will also participate in the exercise.

Exercise SLINEX 2023

The annual maritime exercise exemplifies India and Sri Lanka’s deep engagement, which has strengthened mutual cooperation in the maritime domain. Interaction between the two navies has also increased significantly in recent years, in line with India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)’.

During the harbor phase, both Indian Naval ships will be open to visitors, including schoolchildren. A coordinated Indian Navy-Sri Lanka Navy Band Performance will also be organized in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre. Surface and anti-air firing exercises, seamanship evaluations, helicopter, and maritime patrol aircraft operations, advanced tactical maneuvers, search and rescue, and Special Forces operations at sea would all be part of the Sea Phase.

Significance of SLINEX 2023

SLINEX-2023 will aim to improve interoperability, mutual understanding, and the exchange of best practices and procedures in multi-faceted maritime operations between the two Navies. The Harbour Phase would include sports fixtures, yoga sessions, and cultural events that would allow personnel from both navies to learn from one another, reinforce shared values, and build bonds of friendship and camaraderie.
