The first edition of the bilateral air exercise ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) concluded on January 26, 2023, in Japan.
Aircrafts Involved
The JASDF took part in the exercise with F-2 and F-15 aircraft, while the IAF took part with Su-30 MKI aircraft. One IL-78 Flight Refueling Aircraft and two C-17 Globemaster strategic airlift transport aircraft were added to the IAF fighter contingent.
Veer Guardian 23
During the 16-day joint training, the two Air Forces performed complex and comprehensive aerial maneuvers in a variety of simulated operational scenarios. The exercise required precise planning and execution by both air forces. Both the IAF and the JASDF were involved in air combat maneuvering, interception, and air defense missions in both visual and beyond-visual range settings. The two participating Air Forces’ aircrews also flew in each other’s fighter aircraft to gain a better understanding of each other’s operating philosophies.

Significance of Ex-Veer Guardian 23
The exercise ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ provided an opportunity for the two Air Forces to improve mutual understanding. The exercise also featured numerous ground interactions between IAF and JASDF personnel, during which both sides discussed a variety of topics. This provided the participating contingents with invaluable insight into each other’s best practices and the opportunity to learn from each other’s unique capabilities.
