Defence Current Affairs 28 January 2023

Ex Cyclone I Concluded

  • The joint exercise between Indian Army & Egyptian Army culminated after intense validation training. The exercise was successful in sharing best practices b/w Special Forces of both Nations.
  • The first joint exercise between the special forces of the Indian and the Egyptian Army, ‘Exercise Cyclone – I’ started on 14 January at Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, said the Ministry of Defence.
  • The exercise aimed to bolster defence cooperation between the two countries and focus on sharing professional skills and interoperability of special forces in desert terrain while undertaking counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, raids and other special forces in desert terrain while undertaking counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, raids and other special operations.
  • The 14-day-long exercise was carried out in the deserts of Rajasthan engaging both the contingents to advance special forces skills such as Sniping, Combat Free Fall, Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Target Designation, sharing of information on weapons, equipment, innovations, tactics, techniques & procedures.
  • The participants also undertook joint planning and drills for Special Forces operations in a mechanized warfare setting as well as surgical strikes on terrorist camps/hideouts to include sniping of High-Value Targets.
  • India and Egypt, two of the world’s oldest civilizations, have enjoyed a history of close contact from ancient times. With a population of around 110 million, a location that straddles Africa and Asia, and a capital that hosts the League of Arab States, Egypt is a pivotal player in development.
  • It is also a country with which India enjoyed an exceptionally close relationship since immediately after its Independence. This is only natural, as the two countries were cofounders of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the 1950s.

DRDO Tests HSTDV from Kalam Island off Odisha Coast

  • India has successfully flown tests Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle from Kalam Island off Odisha coast. Developed by DRDO , the technology will help produce long-range cruise missiles upon which DRDO plans to develop weaponized version of Hypersonic weapons.
  • HSTDV is an unmanned scramjet demonstration aircraft that can achieve a velocity greater than five times the speed of sound or Mach-5 or 6115 KM per hour. In the successful mission on Monday, the test flight achieved a speed 6-times greater than the speed of sound or Mach-6.
  • Hypersonic weapons are basically of two types. One, hypersonic cruise missiles that are powered by high-speed, air-breathing engines or “scramjets” during their entire flight. And two, hypersonic glide vehicles that are launched atop ballistic missiles before gliding to their targets at speeds over Mach 5.
  • Hypersonic weapons pose a challenge to the current missile and air defence systems due to their enormous speed and manoeuvrability, both vertically and horizontally, as well as low altitudes of flight.
  • The Indian armed forces already have the conventional ramjet-powered BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, which fly at Mach 2.8 speed, developed jointly with Russia. Their strike range has been enhanced from the original 290-km to 450-km now. But while ramjet engines operate well at supersonic speeds around Mach 3, their efficiency drops at hypersonic speeds.

Northrop Grumman Is Ready To Offer Its MQ-4C UAVs To India

  • Northrop Grumman has expressed interest in supplying India with the MQ-4C, a navalized version of the combat-proven Global Hawk. Northrop Grumman sent a proposal to the Indian Navy in response to a request for information (RFI) issued by the Indian Government in 2011, but the deal fell through due to the overall cost of these UAVs.
  • The Indian Navy is in talks to purchase MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAVs and MQ-4C, also known as broad area maritime surveillance (BAMS) UAVs based on the Global Hawk, to supplement the 737-based multimission maritime aircraft (MMA), the P-8A Poseidon and MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAVs.
  • The MQ-4C broad area maritime surveillance UAV will have a 36-hour endurance and can operate at altitudes of up to 60,000 feet in strong winds and severe weather, with a payload of 3,200 lb. The MQ-4C will be equipped with a 2D AESA radar that will provide 360-degree coverage of a large section of the ocean. The MQ-4C will provide the Indian Navy with a tactical platform capable of scanning large sections of the Indian Ocean for hostile surface and submarine fleets.

Russian Atommash Is Testing Components For India’s Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant’s 5th Unit

  • Atommash, a Russian supplier, has completed work on the assembled reactor pressure vessel and passed the critical pressurizer tests. The entire Kudankulam 5 assembly was completed at Atommash’s factory in Volgodonsk, Russia, using a deep recess in the concrete floor that simulates the vessel’s position in the real power plant.
  • The vessel’s 11-metre-long body was first lowered into position by a crane with a lifting capacity of 600 tonnes. Then a 10-metre hull weighing 73 tonnes was placed inside, along with a 38-ton fence and other items totaling 68 tonnes. The entire component weighed 603 tonnes after the reactor vessel head was attached and closed.
  • The Russian export project currently has two large VVER-1000 reactors in operation, with four more under construction. Units 3 and 4 broke ground in 2017, with units 5 and 6 following in 2021.

Maruti Will Propose Jimny As A Gypsy Replacement For The Indian Army

  • The Indian Army has begun its search for a replacement for the aging but capable Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, which has been a favorite of the armed forces for nearly two decades. Last year, the Army’s proposal to acquire Light Vehicles GS (General Service) 4×4 was approved by the DAC.
  • The Indian Army plans to phase out the replacement of over 35,000 Gypsy soldiers currently in service. Officials from Maruti Suzuki have confirmed that the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which was unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo, will be available to the Indian Army on a customized basis.
  • Maruti Suzuki continued to supply the Gypsy to the Army until 2020, long after the civilian version had been discontinued due to new emission and safety regulations. The Army is looking for a soft-top 4×4 that can be used in mountainous terrain. A soft-top is more versatile because it allows soldiers to place rifles, guns, and mobile communication systems, as well as move Quick Reaction Teams more easily.
  • The Maruti Suzuki Jimny’s current five-door hard-top 4×4 model will be converted into a soft-top model with only two door options, as sold in international markets.
