The Indian and Mozambique navies conducted joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance off the coast of Mozambique. From March 21 to 23, INS Sujata and the Mozambique Navy conducted their first joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance off the coast of Mozambique.
Mozambique naval officers boarded INS Sujata for surveillance and activities such as interrogation, investigation of merchant and fishing vessels, visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations, and training of Bridge and Machinery watchkeepers, according to an Indian Navy statement.
About the EEZ Surveillance Exercise
The ship was welcomed by Captain Nitin Kapoor, DA Pretoria, Commandant NRN Siva Babu, Coast Guard Afloat Support Team, and Captain Florentino Jose Narciso from the Mozambican Navy at the jetty, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Defence on March 21. According to the press release, approximately 40 Mozambican Navy personnel visited the ship for Cross deck training, which included a walkaround of training facilities, a briefing about diving operations, training on VBSS and light weapons, visual communication, and maintenance of machinery and hygiene onboard.
Other activities, such as combined morning yoga sessions and soccer matches, were organized between Indian and Mozambican Navy personnel. Onboard Sujata, a reception was also held, which was attended by several Indian and Mozambican dignitaries and diplomats. In a press release, the Ministry of Defence stated that the INS Sujata’s visit to Mozambique strengthened mutual cooperation and bilateral ties between the two navies.
Significance of the EEZ Surveillance
The joint EEZ surveillance will strengthen India-Mozambique maritime cooperation and is consistent with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of SAGAR, which demonstrates India’s commitment to security and growth for all in the Indian Ocean region.
