The incorporation of the HAMMER precision-guided munition will significantly improve the capacity of India’s indigenous light combat aircraft, the LCA Tejas.
HAMMER is a fighter jet operational capability enhancement system developed by Safran Electronics & Defence, a renowned French aerospace and defence corporation.
According to the ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency) Annual Report, the HAMMER missile-carrying experiments on the LCA-Tejas have begun. The munition was successfully released trialled on LSP7 (Limited Series Production 7) on March 31, 2022, with PV6 (Prototype Vehicle 6) serving as the chase aircraft. The HAMMER munition is a precision-guided armament system that enhances the LCA-Tejas’ strike capability, particularly in high-altitude places such as Eastern Ladakh. With the current geopolitical circumstances in the region, strengthening India’s aircraft capability in such difficult terrains becomes critical.
LCA Tejas in Kashmir
The LCA-Tejas fighter jets have been strategically placed at Awantipur Air Force Station in Kashmir to allow both the personnel and the aircraft to acclimatise to the difficult high-altitude environments. This preparation is critical since two squadrons of improved Tejas Mk1 are slated to arrive here in 2024.
