On August 3, the Indian Navy issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of 12 cutting-edge Counter Mine Warfare Vessels (MCMVs). The long-awaited RFI marks India’s fresh efforts to improve its mine-warfare capabilities, following many failed attempts over the previous 15 years.

Minesweepers: The Need For MCMVs

The Indian Navy does not have a single minesweeper, and the last of its six minesweepers, obtained from the Soviet Union in the late 1970s, was deactivated four years ago. Due to the lack of specialist mine-countermeasure vessels in India’s navy fleet, there is an urgent need for contemporary and advanced MCMVs.

Minesweepers: How Will the Navy Get Its MCMVs

The RFI specifies the specifications for the 12 MCMVs, which will be built over an eight-year period. The order will be shared between the shipyards with the lowest and second-lowest bids. The proposed delivery date for the MCMVs is between 2030 and 2037.

Minesweepers: Armament And Advanced Capabilities

According to the RFI, the focus of these vessels will be their weapons and “cutting-edge” technologies, which will be geared to combat a variety of threats in both the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and naval mine countermeasures (NCM) sectors.

Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure (MCM) Suite

The MCMVs will be outfitted with an Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure (MCM) suite, which will integrate cutting-edge technologies such as underwater drones and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). These self-driving systems will be important in detecting, identifying, and neutralising underwater mines, reducing personnel dangers during mine countermeasure operations.

Weapons Systems

The MCMVs will be outfitted with cutting-edge weaponry, including a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) with an Autonomous Fire Control System (FCS) for precise targeting and engagement of surface and aerial threats. 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCG) will provide a very short-range defence (VSHORADS). Directed Energy Weapons or 30 mm mountings controlled by EOIRST will provide the vessel with even more offensive options.

Communication And Electronic Suite

The MCMVs will be equipped with a cutting-edge communication and electronic suite, which will include radar systems, electronic warfare (EW) systems, and secure communication networks, allowing for seamless data transmission and real-time information sharing.

Sonars

The vessels will be outfitted with cutting-edge ASW equipment as well as modern sonars for efficient submarine detection and tracking. Submarines and mines will be detected and tracked using advanced sonar systems, including hull-mounted and towed array sonars. The extensive sonar suite enables early identification and rapid response to potential underwater hazards.

Minesweepers: Operational Roles

The MCMVs, as described in the RFI, will be adaptable platforms capable of performing a variety of operational missions, such as mine counter-measure operations, route mapping and sanitization, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. These ships will operate effectively in the Indian Ocean, protecting key maritime interests.

Minesweepers Operational Roles

Mine Countermeasure Operations: The MCMVs will excel in locating, identifying, and neutralising sea mines, ensuring safe passage for friendly boats, and combating possible maritime security threats.

Route Survey and Sanitisation: These vessels will conduct extensive surveys of sea routes, detecting and removing any undersea impediments or dangers to ensure safe and efficient marine traffic navigation.

Search and Rescue: The MCMVs will be equipped with increased capabilities to conduct search and rescue missions, responding quickly to distress calls and giving essential help to sailors in need.

Humanitarian Aid And Disaster Relief: During natural disasters or catastrophes, MCMVs will play an important role in delivering humanitarian aid and relief efforts, assisting impacted communities, and facilitating rescue operations.

Minesweepers: Make In India Initiative

The MCMV procurement is part of India’s Make in India initiative, which promotes indigenous shipbuilding skills. The contract is a watershed moment in India’s naval modernization, aligning with the government’s aim of self-reliance in defence and naval procurement.
