The Indian Air Force (IAF) has devised a bold plan to extend the operating life of its fleet of frontline MiG-29 fighter jets. The second life extension scheme intends to push out the retirement of these fearsome aircraft from 2027 to 2037, which was previously scheduled.
Indian Air Force’s MiG-29 Fleet to Undergo Life Extension
This extension essentially keeps the fleet operating for approximately 50 years, demonstrating the IAF’s dedication to optimising existing assets and strengthening air defence capabilities.
The MiG-29 fighter jets were initially introduced into the Indian Air Force in 1986, and they played an important part in bolstering India’s aerial capabilities. India purchased these legendary fighter planes from the Soviet Union as one of the first export customers.

The MiG-29 fleet has demonstrated its worth in a variety of operational settings throughout the years, demonstrating its versatility and combat skills. In the past, the IAF started the first life extension programme under the Upgrade Programme (UPG) to keep the MiG-29 fleet contemporary and combat-ready. This thorough update improved the aircraft’s air-to-ground strike capabilities, altering its previous air supremacy configuration.
With the second life extension plan on the horizon, the IAF is preparing to revitalise its fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets. The project will be carried out at the No.11 Base Repair Depot, which is located near Nashik. This depot is specifically designated for the repair and maintenance of Russian-made fighter aircraft, making it the appropriate site for carrying out this critical life extension programme.

The indigenously produced Tejas MkII fighter jet is ready to take the main stage as the IAF concentrates on modernization and fleet optimisation. The Tejas MkII is expected to replace the ageing Jaguar strike aircraft, with its first flight scheduled for 2025 and subsequent induction scheduled for 2029.
After 2035, the Tejas MkII will play an even larger role in the IAF, replacing both the French Mirage-2000 and the Russian MiG-29UPG fleets. This bold change would streamline the IAF’s fighter jet inventory while also introducing a technologically sophisticated, indigenous platform for future air operations.
