For the first time, the MiG-29K fighter aircraft performed a night landing on indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, a feat characterised by the Indian Navy as a “historic milestone”.
Maiden Night Landing of MiG-29K on INS Vikrant
The Navy said the “challenging” night landing trial demonstrated the resolve, skill and professionalism of the crew of the INS Vikrant and the naval pilots. The Russian-made MiG-29K made a night landing while the ship was sailing in the Arabian Sea on May 24.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Navy on the success of the MiG-29K’s maiden night landing trials on INS Vikrant. The Navy said in a statement that the aircraft carrier is currently undergoing “air certification and flight integration trials” with rotary and fixed-wing aircraft in order to achieve “combat ready” status. The Navy stated that INS Vikrant is a “significant boost” to the government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliance India) vision.
In February, Russian-origin MiG-29K and a prototype of the Naval variant of the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas jets had conducted day landings on the aircraft carrier. In September of last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned India’s first indigenously-built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, bringing the country into an elite group of nations capable of producing aircraft carriers weighing more than 40,000 tonnes. The Navy stated that the aircraft carrier would be able to help maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
