The Philippine Army is actively pursuing plans to strengthen its coastal defence capabilities by procuring BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missile systems. Negotiations with India’s BrahMos Corporation have commenced, and orders are expected later this year.

BrahMos Supersonic Missile for Coastal Defence

This action follows the Philippine Navy’s recent purchase of three batteries of BrahMos missiles for use by the Philippine Marine Corps. With India giving a line of credit to cover Manila’s defence needs, the ground is set for the two countries’ defence ties to be strengthened further. By ordering three batteries of the BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missile, the Philippine Navy has already taken a big step towards improving its marine defence capabilities.

This purchase is part of the Navy’s efforts to modernise its naval assets and improve its coastal defence capabilities. The BrahMos missile, noted for its fast speed and accuracy, will significantly improve the Philippine Navy’s capabilities to deter possible maritime threats. Building on the success of the Philippine Navy’s BrahMos order, the Philippine Army has begun talks with India’s BrahMos Corporation about acquiring more batteries for the supersonic anti-ship cruise missile.

The Army plans to deploy these missiles around the country’s shores to bolster its coastal defence capabilities. The Philippine Army hopes to improve its ability to safeguard its territorial waters and important coastal infrastructure by using the superior capabilities of the BrahMos missile. Earlier this year, 21 members of the Philippine Army’s Coastal Defence Regiment (CDR) completed training in India on the BrahMos anti-ship missile system.

Keeping the Chinese Navy at Bay

The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) is causing concern in the Philippines. The PLAN already has authority over a number of islets, including the Spratly Islands and the Scarborough Shoal. The recent discovery of a Chinese underwater drone on neighbouring Selayar Island, as well as a new regulation authorising the Chinese coast guard to open fire on foreign ships in territories claimed by China, have fueled regional tensions.

The Brahmos acquisition would provide the Philippines with a means to discourage China’s expansionism while also restoring part of the military balance between the two countries. If the Philippines goes forward with the Brahmos purchase, it will be the system’s first export customer.
