Paper Bag Day

  • It is celebrated on 12 July annually to make people aware of the pollution caused due to plastic and the serious threat that it poses to the natural environment. Plastic waste takes thousands of years to decompose. Therefore, it is important to understand the ill effects of single-use plastic bags.
  • In 1852, American inventor Francis Wole established the first paper bag machine. Also in 1871, Margaret E. Knight designed another machine that could produce flat-bottom paper bags. She became famous and became known as the “mother of the grocery bag”. In 1883, Charles Stillwell invented the machine that could produce square-bottom paper bags with pleated sides that made them easy to fold and store. In 1912, Walter Dübner used a cord to reinforce a paper bag and add a carrying handle. Over the years, many inventors came and improved the production of paper bags.
  • The theme for 2022 is “If You’re ‘fantastic’, Do Something ‘dramatic’ To Cut The ‘Plastic’, Use ‘Paper Bags’.

World Malala Day

  • July 12 Is Dedicated To Celebrating Malala Yousafzai, The Young Activist From Pakistan. Malala Was Shot At By Taliban Insurgents While She Was On Her Way To School In 2012.
  • Later, The United Nations Declared July 12, Malala’s Birthday, As World Malala Day In Honour Of The Young Education Activist. The Day Is Observed To Make An Appeal To World Leaders That They Ensure Compulsory And Free Education For Every Child In Their Country.
  • Malala, At The Age Of 17 Received Nobel Peace Prize And Became The Youngest Recipient To Receive It.

22nd National Fish Farmers Day

  • National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying celebrated the 22nd National Fish Farmer’s Day (10th July 2022) to demonstrate solidarity with all fisher folk, and fish farmers, and concerned stakeholders throughout the country. It is celebrated in the memory of scientists Dr. K. H. Alikunhi and Dr. H. L. Chaudhury.
  • Both successfully demonstrated Hypophysation (technology of induced breeding) in Indian Major Carps (common name for several species of fish) on 10th July 1957.

National Emblem On The Roof Of New Parliament

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the National Emblem cast on the roof of the New Parliament Building. He also interacted with the Shramjeevis involved in the construction work of the new Parliament.
  • The National Emblem is made of bronze with a total weight of 9500 kilograms and is 6.5 meters in height. It has been cast at the top of the Central Foyer of the New Parliament Building. A supporting structure of steel weighing around 6500 kilograms has also been constructed to support the Emblem
  • The concept sketch and process of casting the National Emblem on the roof of the New Parliament Building has gone through eight different stages of preparation from clay modeling and computer graphics to bronze casting and polishing.

Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Mela

  • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will hold Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Mela as part of Prime Minister’s Skill India Mission.
  • So far, over one lakh 88 thousand applicants have participated in the Apprenticeship Mela and more than 67 thousand apprenticeship offers have been made on the platform. The one-day event will feature 36 sectors and more than 1000 companies and 500 distinct sorts of trades.
  • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will host the event at more than 200 locations, giving applicants the opportunity to shape their careers through apprenticeship training.
  • Candidates must have a 5th-12th grade pass certificate, a skill training certificate, an ITI Diploma, or a graduate degree to participate. The young and aspiring workforce will be able to choose among 500 plus trades such as welding, electrical work, housekeeping, beauticians, mechanic work, and more.
  • Candidates will also earn National Council for Vocational Education and Training -recognized certifications, improving their employability after the training. The major purpose of this program is to encourage companies to hire more apprentices while also assisting employers in discovering and developing their potential through training and practical skillsets.

India Will Surpass China As The Most Populous Nation

  • The UN in a report has said that India will surpass China as the most populous country on earth in 2023. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, said that the global population is projected to reach eight billion on November 15, 2022.
  • The UN said the world’s population is growing at its slowest pace since 1950. It should hit 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050, peaking at around 10.4 billion people in the 2080s.
  • The report said, while a net drop in birth rates is observed in several developing countries, more than half of the rise forecast in the world’s population in the coming decades will be concentrated in eight countries of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania.
  • Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, without citing specifics said, that the overall population milestone is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.

Wimbledon Championship

  • Elena Rybakina Of Kazakhstan Has Clinched Wimbledon Women’s Singles Title Defeating Jabeur Of Tunisia In The Final. Elena Has Become The First Tennis Player From Kazakhstan To Win A Grand Slam Singles Championship.
  • Serbian Star Novak Djokovic Won Wimbledon 2022 After Beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios In London. Djokovic Has A Total Of Seven Wimbledon Titles With His Last Four Titles Coming In 2018, 2019, 2021, And 2022. It Is Djokovic’s 21st Grand Slam Title Overall.

World Games 2022

  • India has won its first medal at The World Games 2022 being held in Birmingham, USA, with the archer duo of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma bagging a bronze medal in archery, bringing home the country’s first-ever medal in the discipline by defeating Canada’s Andrea Becerra & Miguel Becerra.
  • With this, they have also won India’s fifth overall medal at The World Games.
  • The 11th edition of The World Games is taking place in Birmingham, Alabama, the USA from July 7-17, 2022.
