International Day Of Family Remittances

  • The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and is observed on 16 June.
  • The IDFR recognizes more than 200 million migrant workers, women and men, who send money home to over 800 million family members.
  • This day further highlights the great resilience of migrant workers in the face of economic insecurities, natural and climate related disasters and a global pandemic.
  • The IDFR is now globally recognized and is a key initiative in the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (Objective 20), which urges the reduction of transfer costs and greater financial inclusion through remittances.
  • A May 2021 report by the World Bank reveals a drop in remittances of only 1.6 per cent in 2020, to US$ 540 billion from US$ 548 in 2019. In 2021, remittance flows grew even further, reaching US$ 605 billion sent to low- and middle-income countries (World Bank, 2022).

National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment 2021

  • Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions releases the second edition of the National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment 2021, NeSDA 2021.
  • J&K tops among UTs in e-Governance services delivery saving around Rs 200 crore annually that was incurred in the carriage of physical files during the Annual Durbar move between the two capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
  • NeSDA was launched in August 2018, based on the Online Service Index (OSI) of UNDESA eGovernment Survey (UN E-Government Survey 2020 by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, since 2001).
  • This is the second edition of NeSDA, the first edition was launched in 2019.
  • The framework covers six sectors, viz. Finance, Labour & Employment, Education, Local Government & Utilities, Social Welfare (including Agriculture & Health) and Environment (including Fire) sectors.
  • Among the Central Ministry Services Portals, scores have improved for 6 portals while among States and UTs, scores have improved for 28 of the State / UT Portals and for 22 of the State / UT Services Portals.

National Workshop On Dam Safety Act, 2021

  • Jal Shakti Ministry will organize National Workshop on Dam Safety Act, 2021 in New Delhi tomorrow. The workshop is aimed at sensitizing all stakeholders about the provisions of the Act and to Brainstorm on Dam Safety Governance.
  • There are around five thousand three hundred and thirty-four large dams in the country and four hundred and eleven large dams are under various stages of construction.
  • Maharashtra leads with two thousand 394 dams while Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are at the second and third spots in terms of the number of dams.
  • India’s dams annually store about 300 billion cubic metres of water. These dams are ageing over the years with about 80 per cent of dams exceeding 25 years of age and over 227 dams exceeding one hundred years.
  • The ageing of dams and deferred maintenance of the dam have made dam safety a matter of concern.
  • The Dam Safety Act, 2021 was enacted by the Parliament and came into force from 30th of December last year.
  • The act is aimed at ensuring surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of the specified dam for prevention of dam failure-related disasters. It is also aimed to provide an institutional mechanism to ensure their safe functioning.

Cabinet Clears 5G Spectrum Auction

  • The Union Government has said that the 5G spectrum auction will commence on 26th of next month.
  • Communications Ministry has said that the Department of Telecom has issued notice inviting applications to facilitate roll-out of 5G.
  • It said, with considerable success in rolling out widespread 4G services, India is now ready to introduce 5G telecom services in the country.
  • The successful bidders will be allowed to make payment in 20 equal annual installments, at the interest rate of 7.2 percent.
  • The Ministry said, spectrum acquired through this auction can be surrendered after a minimum period of ten years.
  • There will be no Spectrum Usage Charges for spectrum acquired in this auction.

First National Conference Of Chief Secretaries

  • The first three-day National Conference of Chief Secretaries of all the states begins in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba inaugurated the conference.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the conference which will continue till Friday.
  • More than 200 participants representing the Central Government, States, Union Territories, and thematic sector experts will participate in this conference.
  • The conference will deliberate on the implementation of a new education policy, urban governance and crop, diversification, and self-reliance in agricultural commodities.
  • The focus will be on rapid and sustainable economic growth in partnership with the Centre and the States.

India & UN To Sign “Way Finding Application”

  • Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for the signing of an agreement between India and the United Nations on a ‘Way Finding Application’ to be used in the Palais des Nations, United Nations Office at Geneva.
  • The project of development of ‘Way Finding Application’ has been conceptualized as a donation from India to the UN on the occasion of its 75th anniversary in 2020.  The estimated financial implication for the development deployment and maintenance of the App is two million dollars.
  • The United Nations Office at Geneva, consisting of five buildings and 21 floors, is housed at the historic Palais des Nations.  A large number of delegates, members of civil society and the general public visit to participate in various meetings and conventions.
  • Keeping in view the complexity of buildings and huge participation, there was a requirement of a navigational application that can help the visitors and other delegates in finding their way inside the premises while adhering to all security perspectives. The GPS-based Apps will assist the visitors in locating the room and offices.

‘Kranti Gatha’ – A Gallery Of Indian Revolutionaries

  • The Prime Minister inaugurated the  ‘Kranti Gatha’ a newly created Gallery of Indian Revolutionaries inside the underground British – era bunker at Raj Bhavan Mumbai and Jal Bhushan, the new residence and office of the Governor of Maharashtra.
  • Mumbai Raj Bhavan is akin to the culture of Maharashtra which manifests courage, dedication, spirituality, and the freedom fight. The Prime Minister said, this place also saw the downfall of colonial rule and the hoisting of the tricolor with pride. The revolutionaries who have got a place in the gallery of revolutionaries will further strengthen the patriotic values.
  • Maharashtra has inspired the country in various fields. Talking about social reform; from Sant Tukaram to Babasaheb Ambedkar there is a prosperous heritage of social reformers.  Maharashtra has given innumerable freedom fighters, he added.

8th Global Conference Of Young Parliamentarians

  • Egypt is hosting the Eighth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Sharm El Sheikh.
  • The two-day conference is jointly organized by the House of Representatives and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
  • Nagaland’s first woman elected as Member of Parliament to Rajya Sabha S. Phangon Konyak is representing India at the Conference. She, along with two other young Lok Sabha MPs from India, will be sharing her thoughts on the ‘Young MPs for Climate Actions’.
  • The 8th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians provides a platform for young MPs from across the world to exchange learn and define common and innovative strategies to advance youth empowerment.
  • This year in Egypt, around 200 young MPs, from 60 countries are participating to discuss strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change and ensure that global warming does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in line with the Paris Agreement.
  • According to official information shared by IPU, there are 35,177 Parliamentary seats globally but just 2.66 per cent of these are held by young MPs.
