Nelson Mandela International Day

  • Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honor of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday.
  • The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.
  • Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
  • He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
  • His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by fostering racial reconciliation.
  • Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as the president of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.

World Day For International Justice

  • World Day for International Justice, also referred to as Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day, is an international day celebrated throughout the world on July 17 as part of an effort to recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice.
  • July 17 is the date of the adoption of the treaty that created the International Criminal Court.
  • On 1 June 2010, at the Review Conference of the Rome Statute held in Kampala (Uganda), the Assembly of State Parties decided to celebrate 17 July as the Day of International Criminal Justice.
  • Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to promote international criminal justice, especially support for the International Criminal Court.
  • The Theme For World Justice Day 2022 Is ‘Achieving Social Justice Through Formal Employment’.

7th Anniversary Of The Skill India Mission

  • The 7th anniversary of the Skill India Mission was observed on 15th July. National Skill Development Mission also known as Skill India Mission was launched on this day in 2015.
  • Skill India is an initiative of the central government to empower the youth with skill sets, making them more employable.
  • The program has numerous benefits, and its objective is to enable youth to take up training in order to secure a better livelihood.
  • Over one crore youth are getting trained every year under the Skill India Mission. Under the Pradhanmantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna, more than one crore 36 lakh young persons have been trained so far.
  • Over 11 lakh 28 thousand candidates have been trained under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana and around seven lakh got placement.

94th Foundation Day Of ICAR

  • The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous body responsible for coordinating agricultural education and research in India.
  • It reports to the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Ministry of Agriculture.
  • The Union Minister of Agriculture serves as its president.
  • It is the largest network of agricultural research and education institutes in the world.
  • It Was Established On 16 July 1929.
  • Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar gave away 92 Excellence Awards in five categories to Agricultural Institutions, Centres of Agriculture Science, Agriculture Scientists, and Farmers for their outstanding contribution in the field of Agricultural Science and Research.

18th All India Legal Services Authority Meet

  • Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana has expressed concern over the pending cases in the different courts of the country and emphasized on strengthening the infrastructure of the courts and filling up the vacant posts of Judges.
  • Inaugurating the 18th All India Legal Services Authority Meet in Jaipur, Justice Ramana said that the National Lok Adalats have played an important role in the disposal of litigations in the country. He said that two crore cases have been disposed off.
  • Justice Ramana said that justice should be available to all and for this purpose, judicial aid is being provided to needy persons through the Legal Services Authority.
  • Addressing the program, Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju said that with the coordination between the judiciary and the governments, avenues can be explored to provide speedy justice to the people. He said that five crore cases are pending in the courts and every possible step should be taken to reduce the burden on the courts.

e-Sanjeevani Tele-Consultation Crosses 5 Crore Mark

  • Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya today said that more than five crore people received the benefit of e-Sanjeevani Tele-consultation.
  • Patients consult with doctors and specialists daily using this innovative digital medium to seek health services.
  • The e-Sanjeevani facility has led to massive improvement in access to specialised health services, particularly in rural areas.
  • In a tweet, Dr Mandaviya said, the poor living in remote areas of the country are getting expert doctor’s advice at Health and Wellness Centres.
  • He said, e-Sanjeevani is the best example of Digital Health and people can take advantage of e-Sanjeevani Tele-consultation through the app.

G20 Finance Ministers And Central Bank Governors Meet

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underlined the need to improve the effectiveness of the G20 Common Framework. She said this while speaking at the third session on the International Financial Architecture in Bali, Indonesia, which is hosting the third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting.
  • Mrs. Sitharaman also commended the work of an expert panel on the Multilateral Development Bank and suggested developing a roadmap for implementing its recommendations.
  • Mrs. Sitharaman shared India’s two-pronged energy transition plan, promoting renewables in the energy mix and adopting innovative policy measures for increasing energy efficiency and security.
  • she also shared her views on the group’s health agenda, including pandemics, preparedness, and response mechanisms. She called for a global coordination mechanism with the World Health Organisation at its center.

MHA Website Ranks First In NeGSDA

  • The website of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been ranked first under the Central Ministries Portal in National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment.
  • The Digital Police portal of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) was placed at two in the assessment under the Central Ministries Services Portal.
  • Part of periodic assessment intended to improve the effectiveness of states and Union Territories and Central governments in the delivery of online services to citizens.
  • All Government portals that were evaluated were divided into two main categories, states, and Union Territories and Central Ministry service portals.

“Jagriti” Mascot Launched

  • The Department of Consumer Affairs has launched “Jagriti”, a mascot for empowering consumers and generating awareness of their rights.
  • Jagriti will be projected as an empowered consumer who is spreading awareness about consumer rights and addressing solutions to the problems faced by the consumers.
  • The “Jagriti” mascot will be used to generate consumer awareness about various themes of the Department. The Themes include provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 2019, Hallmarking, National Consumer Helpline toll-free number 1915, provisions of the weights and measures Act, decisions of the Central Consumer Protection Authority, and testimonials by consumers on grievance redressal.
  • Jagriti mascot shall be shown along with the tagline “Jago Grahak Jago” in all its media campaigns.

Varanasi To Be Cultural And Tourism Capital Of SCO

  • Varanasi will be the first city in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) region to be granted the rotating title of ‘Cultural & Tourism capital of SCO’ under a new mechanism during India’s SCO Presidency from September 2022 to September 2023.
  • Announcing this in Beijing at a press conference, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming said that people-to-people cooperation is an important area under the SCO framework and member states are very proactive and positive and implemented a large amount of cooperation in cultures.
  • India will take over as SCO chair from Uzbekistan at the Samarkand summit in September this year.

Vice Presidential Candidates Announced

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) named West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, as the National Democratic Alliance’s nominee for the vice-presidential election, which will be held on August 6.
  • Dhankhar’s election as the Vice President is almost certain as the BJP has a majority in the electoral college comprising members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Out of Parliament’s current strength of 780, the BJP alone has 394 MPs, more than the majority mark of 390.
  • The opposition declared former Union minister and veteran Congress leader Margaret Alva as its candidate for vice-presidential election.
  • The decision was announced by NCP chief Sharad Pawar after an all-party meet by the opposition parties in New Delhi.
  • Alva, 80, would file her nomination papers on Tuesday, July 19 which is the last date for filing nominations for the August 6 election.

PV Sindhu Clinches Singapore Open

  • In Badminton, ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has clinched Women’s Single title of the Singapore Open.
  • The Two-time Olympic medalist defeated Wang Zhi Yi of China, 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 to claim her maiden title in Singapore Open and third title this year after registering wins in Korea Open and Swiss Open.
  • It took her just 12 minutes to wrap up the opening game which included winning 13 consecutive points.
  • Wang Zhi however fought back in superb fashion to draw level as he gained the second game. The decider started on a nail-biting note before she gained a five-point lead at the interval.
  • The Chinese looked to fight back but eventually fell shot in the end.

India Achieves 2 Billion Doses Of Covid-19 Vaccine Mark

  • India has crossed the landmark of administering 2 Billion doses of the COVID19 vaccine today under the nationwide vaccination drive.
  • In a tweet, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said 17th July 2022 is a day to remember forever.
  • World Health Organisation, WHO has hailed India for administering over two billion COVID-19 vaccine doses. WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh said, this is yet another evidence of the country’s commitment and efforts to minimize the impact of the ongoing pandemic.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated all Indians on crossing the special figure of 200 crore COVID vaccine doses. In a tweet, Mr. Modi said India has created history again.
  • He said he is proud of those who contributed to making India’s vaccination drive unparalleled in scale and speed. Mr. Modi added that this has strengthened the global fight against COVID-19.
