Village Defence Guard member killed in encounter with gunmen in J&K

  • A Village Defence Guard member was killed in an exchange of fire with unidentified gunmen on Sunday morning in Panara village of Basantgarh in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The incident took place around 7:45 am, when armed forces accompanied by VDG member Muhammad Shareef, intercepted some of the individuals moving suspiciously in the area.
  • The exchange of fire was reported from Panara village of Basantgarh when a patrolling party of police and VDGs confronted the suspected terrorists around 7:45 am, the officials said.
  • According to them, following an initial exchange of fire that last over half an hour, the terrorists fled deep into the forest area and were being chased by the security forces.
  • VDG member Mohd Sharief, a resident of Khaned, was critically injured in the firing and later succumbed to injuries, the officials stated.

Indian Navy Rescues Panama-flagged Crude Oil Tanker

  • The Indian Navy has successfully rescued the crew of a Panama-flagged crude oil tanker, MV Andromeda Star, after it came under a missile attack by Houthi militants. The vessel was attacked in the Red Sea on April 26, prompting a rapid response from the Indian Navy’s destroyer, INS Kochi.
  • The attack resulted in minor damage to the vessel, which is operated by a company based in Seychelles.
  • According to the US Central Command, Iranian-backed Houthi militants launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen into the Red Sea, targeting the merchant vessel Maisha and MV Andromeda Star.
  • All 30 crew members, including 22 Indian nationals, were reported safe, and the vessel proceeded with its scheduled journey to the next port.

ICG Foils Pakistan’s Drug Smuggling Attempt; Seizes Narcotics

  • ICG intercepted 86 kg of narcotics worth Rs 600 crore from a Pakistani boat off the Gujarat coast on Sunday. The 14 crew members who were attempting to smuggle the drugs into India were arrested and brought to Porbandar for further investigations.
  • “In a breathtaking overnight operation, Indian Coast Guard undertook an intelligence-based anti-narcotics operation at sea on 28 Apr 24. Approx 86 kg of narcotics worth Rs 600 crore has been apprehended along with 14 crew from the Pakistani boat,” the ICG said.
  • “The jointness of ICG and ATS, which has led to eleven such successful law enforcement operations in the last three years, itself reaffirms the synergy for national objectives,” it added.

Houthis strike again: Oil tanker damaged, US drone shot down

  • Yemen’s Houthis have struck again, with reports emerging of an oil tanker damaged and a US drone shot down amid escalating tensions over Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
  • In his latest televised address, the Houthis’ military spokesman, Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility for targeting the “British oil ship Andromeda Star” in the Red Sea with naval missiles. The vessel sustained minor damage, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), but is continuing its journey unimpeded.

Nainital Forest Fire

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Saturday that the Indian Army and Air Force helicopters are assisting in controlling forest fires in the state that have reached Nainital after raging for over 36 hours and burning several hectares of green cover.
  • A massive fire broke out in Ladiyakata area of the Nainital Air Force Centre on Friday. The blaze has been burning for over 36 hours, sweeping through dense forests in the mountainous region.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed MI-17 helicopters to assist in the firefighting efforts. These helicopters are pulling water from Nainital Lake to douse the flames, resulting in a temporary halt to boating activities on the lake.
