Madras Day
- Madras Day is a festival organised to commemorate the founding of the city of Madras in Tamil Nadu, India.
- It is celebrated on 22 August every year, 22 August 1639 being the widely agreed date for the purchase of the village of Madraspatnam or Chennapatnam by East India Company factors Andrew Cogan and Francis Day from Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, the viceroy of the Vijayanagar Empire.
- The idea of a Madras Day was first suggested by Chennai-based journalist Vincent D’Souza to historian S. Muthiah during a meeting of the trustees of the Chennai Heritage foundation in 2004.
Remembrance Of The Slave Trade And Its Abolition
- The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is an international day celebrated August 23 of each year, the day designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade.
- That date was chosen by the adoption of resolution by the Organization’s General Conference at its 29th session.
- July 29, 1998, from the Director-General invited Ministers of Culture to promote the day.
- The date is significant because, during the night of August 22 to August 23, 1791, on the island of Saint Domingue (now known as Haiti), an uprising began which set forth events that were a major factor in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
Aadhaar In Form 6B Is Voluntary Says ECI
- Election Commission today reiterated that submission of AADHAAR in Form 6B is voluntary. In a tweet, the Commission said no entry in electoral roll shall be d on the ground of non-submission of AADHAAR.
- The new form 6B, which came into effect on the first of this month, has been introduced for collecting Aadhaar number of existing electors to authenticate the entries in the electoral rolls and make it error-free.
23rd Central Zonal Council Meeting In Bhopal
- Addressing A 23rd Central Zonal Council Meeting At Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre At Bhopal. Mr Shah Informed That A Total Of 30 Issues Were Discussed In The Last Meeting Held In Raipur, Out Of Which 26 Issues Have Been Resolved.
- This Is An Example Of The Success Of Such Meetings. He Said That The Speed Of Resolution Of Problems Has Increased Due To The Continuous Meetings Of The Inter-state Council And The States Are Also Adopting Each Other’s Good Efforts.
Silk Mark Expo
- The expo is being organised by the Silk Mark Organisation of India under Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Jardosh said, during the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the Textile Ministry has launched various schemes aiming at giving boost to the textile sector.
- Weavers specially women artisans have put rigorous efforts in making original silk products that will attract consumers across the country. Silk Mark is a quality assurance label launched by government to determine that the product is made up of pure natural silk.
- This mark will highlight qualifying standards, which will eventually build consumer confidence in both domestic and export markets.
2nd Phase Of Grameen Udyami Project
- National Skill Development Corporation, NSDC in partnership with Seva Bharti and Yuva Vikas Society on Saturday launched the second phase of Grameen Udyami Project to augment skill training in tribal communities for their inclusive and sustainable growth. Under the initiative, the endeavour is to multiskill India’s youth and impart functional skills to them for enabling livelihoods.
- Launching the programme, Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said, Central Government’s complete focus is on strengthening sustainable livelihood for tribal population and it has sanctioned a budget of 85 thousand crore rupees exclusively for tribal areas. He said, there is so much potential and ability in the tribal youth that all we need to do is lay down the right avenues for them to use their talent in the right places.
- Grameen Udyami is a unique multiskilling project, funded by NSDC that aims to train 450 tribal students in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. The project is being implemented in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Gujarat.
India Shines At U-20 World Wrestling Championships
- 17-year-old Haryana wrestler Antim Panghal has become the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold medal at Under-20 World Wrestling Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. She scored an 8-0 win over Atlyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan in 53kg category to achieve this feat.
- This gold medal is historic in its own ways as India has never won any gold medal in women’s wrestling at U20 World Championships. Antim Panghal belongs to Haryana’s Bhagana village in the Hisar district.
- Sonam Malik and Priyanka won silver medals in 62 kg and 65 kg respectively after losing the gold medal bouts.
Greece Exits EU’s ‘Enhanced Surveillance’ Framework
- Greece has announced that it has exited the European Union’s enhanced surveillance framework. Country’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made this announcement yesterday. In a statement, Mr. Mitsotakis said, it ends 12 years of pain and allows the country greater freedom in policymaking. EU officials had confirmed yesterday’s exit earlier this month, saying Athens had delivered on the bulk of its commitments.
- Greece was hit with waves of pension cuts, spending constraint, tax increases and bank controls after it was forced to seek its first bailout in 2010. The economy shrank 25 per cent during the bailouts.
- Greek economic developments and policy have been monitored under the framework since 2018, after Athens exited three international bailouts, totaling more than 260 billion euros, from the European Union and the IMF between 2010 and 2015.
Praggnanandhaa Defeats Magnus Carlsen
- R Praggnanandhaa, Indian chess master, defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen in the last round of the FTX Crypto Cup in Miami, an international chess championship, this morning.
- Despite the win, the 17-year-old chess player bagged the second position in the championship since Carlsen had a higher score based on previous games.
- Praggnanandhaa defeated Carlsen in the blitz tiebreak after the score was tied 2-2 at the end of the regulation game. Praggnanandhaa rose to prominence in February this year after defeating world champion Carlsen in an online chess match.
- At the Airthings Masters rapid chess competition, Carlsen lost to Praggnanandhaa, then only 16. Moreover, in May this year, Praggnanandhaa defeated Carlsen at the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament. The Indian became the youngest international chess master in history at the age of 10.
