World Coconut Day
- World Coconut Day is celebrated on September 2 to highlight the versatility of the fruit. Member of the drupe family, coconut is one of those fruits with a wide variety of uses. From its flesh to its water and even the husk, the fruit is utilized in multiple ways. Coconut is mostly planted in tropical regions and is highly nutritious.
- World Coconut Day is observed in the Asia-Pacific region with an aim to raise awareness about the uses and benefits of fleshy fruit. The day was first observed by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), an intergovernmental organization that has several coconut-producing countries including India as its members.
- India is among the largest producers of coconut in the world. The fruit is grown in states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
National Nutrition Week
- National Nutrition Week is celebrated from September 1 to September 7 to highlight the importance of having a balanced nutrition diet.
- It also focuses on the importance of building an effective immune system.
- The body needs nutrition in order to grow and develop, physically as well as mentally. Several events and seminars are organized across the globe to stress the importance of nutrition and how can a person bring a change to their lifestyle. In today’s fast-paced world, most of us often tend to give less attention to our eating habits.
- And the week reminds us to make the necessary tweaks.
- The Integrated Health And Wellbeing Council institutionalized “Bharat Nutrition Week” in the year 2020. Basically, the main idea behind establishing this special week is to educate people about the importance of a nutrition-rich diet.
- According to Global Hunger Health Index Report 2021, India ranked 101st among 116 countries. With a score of 27.5, India has a level of hunger that is serious.
- On the other hand, India also has many people who are obese. The urban population mainly experiences obesity due to unhealthy lifestyle choices, haphazard eating patterns, and usage of processed and refined food items.
Rashtriya Poshan Maah
- Ministry of Women and Child Development is celebrating the 5th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2022 across the nation from today to 30th September.
- This year, the objective of the Poshan Maah is to trigger Poshan Maah through Gram Panchayats as Poshan Panchayats with key focus on “Mahila aur Swasthya” and “Bacha aur Shiksha”.
- Rashtriya Poshan Maah serves as a platform to bring focus to the discourse of nutrition and good health. In the 5th Rashtriya Poshan Maah the aim is to convert Jan Andolan into Jan Bhagidari to fulfill the Prime Minister’s vision of a Suposhit Bharat.
- Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition- POSHAN Abhiyaan is Government of India’s flagship programme to improve nutritional outcomes for children under six years of age , adolescent Girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the programme from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan on 8 March, 2018. Focusing on the aims of POSHAN Abhiyaan, the government has launched Mission Poshan 2.0 as an integrated nutrition support program.
Cyber Security Exercise “Synergy” Conducted
- Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, in collaboration with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore successfully designed and conducted the Cyber Security Exercise “Synergy” for 13 Countries.
- It was a part of the International Counter Ransomware Initiative- Resilience Working Group. The Group is being led by India under the leadership of National Security Council Secretariat.
- The theme of the exercise was “Building Network Resiliency to counter Ransomware Attacks”.
- The exercise scenario was derived from real life cyber incidents, in which a domestic level (limited impact) ransomware incident escalates to a global cyber security crisis.
- The Exercise “Synergy” was hosted by CERT-In on its exercise simulation platform. Each State participated as a National Crisis Management Team having composition from different government agencies.
- The specific objective of the exercise was to Assess, Share and Improve strategies and practices among Member-States to build network resiliency against ransomware & cyber extortion attacks.
CAPF e-Awas
- Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Central Armed Police Forces’ eAwas web portal in New Delhi.
- Ministry of Home Affairs said, increasing the Housing Satisfaction Ratio for CAPFs personnel is one of the priority areas of the Government.
- In order to operationalize the revised policy of allotment and to also bring transparency to the allotment process, a common web-portal ‘CAPF eAwas’ has been developed.
- The web portal will enable online registration and allotment of residential quarters to eligible personnel of CAPFs and Assam Rifles.
Sri Lanka, IMF Agreement For Loan Of 2.9 Billion USD
- The Sri Lankan government and International Monetary Fund (IMF) have reached a preliminary agreement for a loan of 2.9 billion dollars to support country’s economic policies with 48-month arrangement under Extended Fund Facility.
- In a statement, the IMF said that Sri Lanka’s new Fund-supported programme aims to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability. It also safeguarding financial stability, protecting the vulnerable, and stepping up structural reforms to address corruption vulnerabilities and unlock growth potential, the statement added.
- A senior IMF official Peter Breuer said that the staff level agreement is only the beginning of a long road for Sri Lanka.
- According to media reports, the agreement is subject to approval by IMF management and its executive board.
EU To Suspend Visa Agreement With Russia
- European Union foreign ministers have agreed to suspend a visa agreement with Moscow and making it harder for Russian citizens to obtain entry to the bloc.
- Ukraine and some member states had called for a blanket ban, however others like France and Germany were opposed.
- Several eastern EU countries that border Russia are expected to impose further restrictions.
- On other hand, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Glushko said, the EU was shooting itself in the foot and the move would not go unanswered.
- According to media reports, more than a million Russian citizens have travelled to the EU since Russia has started special military operations against Ukraine in February.
Russia Completely Halts Gas Supplies To Europe
- Russia has completely halted gas supplies to Europe via a major pipeline, citing maintenance.
- The Russian state-owned energy giant, Gazprom said the restrictions on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would last for the next three days.
- European governments have accused Russia of using energy supplies as a weapon of war. However, Moscow denies doing this and has cited technical reasons for supply cuts.
- Russia, which before the reductions started accounted for a bit more than a third of Germany’s gas supplies, has also reduced the flow of gas to other European countries which have sided with Ukraine. In recent weeks, Nord Stream 1 has been running at only 20% of capacity.
- European leaders fear Russia could extend the outage in an attempt to drive up gas prices, which have already risen sharply in the past year.
