Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), India’s foremost aerospace and defence corporation, has completed the manufacturing of 15 Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) ahead of time. These 15 LCH units are preproduction models that will be used by the Indian Army Aviation and Indian Air Force to conduct user trials of this revolutionary attack helicopter in the near future.

HAL Completes Production of 15 Light Combat Helicopter

The LCH has proven to be an invaluable asset, becoming the world’s only assault helicopter capable of landing and taking off at heights of up to 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) while carrying a considerable load of armaments and fuel. This capacity greatly augments the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Army’s firepower in high-altitude zones, strengthening the nation’s security in difficult mountainous terrain.

Light Combat Helicopter – LCH

The LCH, a twin-engine combat helicopter, is a 5-8 tonne specialised platform conceived and built by HAL. The notion for this complex helicopter arose from the 1999 Kargil conflict when there was a strong desire for a specialised aircraft capable of operating effectively in high-altitude terrains.

The LCH was designed with a strong emphasis on indigenous content, in line with the “Make in India” policy and the country’s ambition for self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing. As previously indicated, the Light Combat Helicopter has roughly 45% indigenous content by value, which is planned to gradually increase to more than 55% for the Series Production version.

The Light Combat Helicopters have already been placed on the import embargo list, which is a stunning step. This strategic decision underlines the government’s commitment to supporting indigenous defence manufacturers and demonstrates the nation’s trust in HAL and its superior aerospace technologies.
