MoD Approves Rs 2800 Cr Rockets for Pinaka weapon System

  • In a major boost for the Indian Army, the Defence Ministry has approved a Rs 2,800 crore proposal for buying around 6,400 rockets for Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems.
  • The Defence Ministry’s Defence Acquisition Council’s recent meeting had cleared the proposal for the acquisition of two types of these rockets, known as Area Denial Munition Type 2 and Type-3.
  • The rockets would be procured by the Indian Army from indigenous sources only and two main contenders include the Economic Explosives Limited of Solar Industries and the Munitions India Limited— one of the ammunition-producing companies created by the corporatization of the erstwhile Ordnance Factories.
  • The Indian-made Pinaka weapon system, named after the bow of Hindu God Shiva, has been developed by the DRDO.
  • The weapon system is one of the first few Indian military terms to have been exported to foreign countries, including Armenia.
  • Private sector companies involved in the project include Larsen & Toubro, Tata Defence and Economic Explosives Limited.

Need To Reform, Rebuild War Fighting Machinery

  • Future battlespace will be cluttered, congested, contested and complex, said Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari on Thursday, underscoring the need to reimagine, reform, redesign and rebuild the traditional war fighting machinery to adapt to this emerging paradigm. He also tomorrow’s wars cannot be fought with imported weapons, and it was imperative to develop indigenous weaponry, particularly air-launched weapons.
  • The Chief of Air Staff (CAS) was delivering the General BC Joshi Memorial Lecture on ‘Transformation of IAF into a Contemporary and Future Ready Aerospace Force’ here at the Savitribai Phule Pune University.
  • Chaudhari spoke about the significance of well-trained personnel and the complexities of a technology-driven battlespace.
  • He said investment in innovation and “disruptive” training programmes with a focus on technology infusion for skill development will prove to be decisive in future multi-domain operations.

US Senate Passes Annual Defence Policy Bill With USD 886 Billion Package

  • The US Senate approved the annual defence policy bill with a compromise 886 billion USD package that laid out how the pentagon will be funded through the next fiscal year.
  • The National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) is one of the largest bills passed annually by lawmakers and is a yearlong process for Congress.
  • The defence bill was finalized by conference negotiators in the House and Senate last week, after the chambers passed vastly different versions over the summer, with House Republicans slipping in provisions on the culture wars engulfing America.
  • The final bill dropped many of the controversial House amendments. An amendment to block the Pentagon’s abortion policy failed to make it into the NDAA, as did another preventing the Defence Department from funding gender-affirming surgery.
  • India is the third largest military spender after the United States and China, with the expenditure going up by 0.9 per cent from 2020 to $76.6 billion, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said.
