Indian Navy Unveils New Design For Admirals’ Epaulettes

  • Indian Navy unveiled a new design for Admirals’ epaulettes, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The unveiling of the epaulettes, a shoulder piece worn to show the rank of an officer, came three-and-a-half weeks after PM Narendra Modi made an announcement on it.
  • In his address at the Navy Day celebrations at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra on December 4, Modi expressed happiness that the epaulettes donned by the naval officers will now highlight the heritage and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
  • Admirals’ epaulettes now have the golden Navy button along with an octagon, and an Indian sword and a telescope crossed, followed by stars reflecting the ranks of rear admiral, vice admiral and admiral.

New Design And Test Facility For Aero Engine R&D At HAL

  • Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane on Friday inaugurated a new design and test facility at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Aero Engine Research and Development Centre, Bengaluru.
  • The AERDC is currently involved in the design and development of several new engines including two strategic engines – Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine of 25 kN thrust for powering trainers, UAVs, twin-engine small fighter aircraft or regional jets, and Hindustan Turbo Shaft Engine of 1200 kN thrust for powering light and medium weight helicopters (3.5 to 6.5 tonnes in single/twin engine).
  • The new state-of-the-art facility houses special machines, advanced setups leveraging on computational tools, in-house fabrication facility and two test beds for testing HTFE-25 and one testbed each for testing HTSE-1200 and upcoming JV engine for Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH) to be co-developed by Safran, France and HAL, the company said in a release.

Delivery Of 7th 250 Men Ferry Craft ‘MANJULA’

  • Contract for construction and delivery of 07 x 250 Men Ferry Craft was concluded with M/s Shalimar Works Ltd, Kolkata, in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives of the Government of India.
  • Six out of Seven Ferry craft have already been delivered to IN. Seventh Ferry craft, ‘Manjula’ (Yard 786) has been delivered to Indian Navy on 29 Dec 23 in presence of Rear Admiral Deepak Kumar Goswami, ASD.
  • With a capacity to ferry 250 Men, Induction of ‘Manjula’ (Yard 786) would provide impetus to Operational Commitments of IN by facilitating Transportation of both Men and Material between Indian Naval Ports and Ships/Submarines at anchorage.

IAF Chief Visits Two Frontline Operational Bases In Western Sector

  • The Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari of the Indian Air Force visited two frontline operational bases in the western sector, the IAF said in a statement.
  • The IAF chief was briefed on the operational readiness of the bases, the statement said.
  • Earlier, On December 22, the Air Chief while addressing the 20th Subroto Mukerjee Seminar at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi emphasised India’s proactive role in raising the concerns of the countries of Global South.

Britain To Send 200 Air Defence Missiles To Ukraine

  • Britain is sending around 200 air defence missiles to Ukraine to help protect civilians and infrastructure from Russian drones and bombing, the British ministry of defence said.
  • The shipment comes as Russia unleashed one of its biggest missile attacks on Ukraine of the war, according to Kyiv, killing 18 civilians and wounding dozens others.
  • The air defence missiles, manufactured in Britain by defence contractor MBDA, are designed to be launched from aircraft including Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets, the defence ministry said.
  • Britain has committed a total of 4.6 billion pounds ($5.9 billion) in military support for Ukraine over two years.
