PM Jan Dhan Yojana Completes Eight Years
- Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana PMJDY, the National Mission for Financial Inclusion completed eight years of successful implementation today, August 28th. More than 46.25 crore beneficiaries banked under PMJDY since inception, amounting to over one lakh 73 thousand crore rupees. PMJDY Accounts grew three-fold from 14.72 crore in March 2015 to 46.25 crore as on the 10th of this month.
- 56 percent Jan-Dhan account holders are women and 67 percent of Jan Dhan accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas. 31.94 crore RuPay cards have been issued to PMJDY account holders.
India’s First Earthquake Memorial: Smruti Van
- PM Modi dedicated India’s first earthquake memorial, named Smruti Van at Bhuj in Gujarat. Smruti Van is a unique memorial carrying the names of more than 12 thousand people who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that struck here in January 2001.
- This novel memorial is spread across 470 acres of land and is built atop Bhujiyo hill. The earthquake simulator will provide real like experience of earthquake tremors to visitors. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and State BJP President C. R. Patil were present on the occasion.
- Earlier, the Prime Minister received a grand welcome in a road show organized in Bhuj. Mr. Modi will launch and lay the foundation stone for various developmental projects in Kutch. In the evening, he will preside at a function organised at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar to commemorate the 40 years of Maruti Suzuki in the country.
Khadi Utsav Celebrated In Ahmedabad
- Prime minister Narendra Modi has said that khadi will be the inspiration to achieve the dream of self-reliant India. Addressing a gathering at Khadi Utsav at Sabarmati River Front in Ahmedabad today, Prime minister appealed to citizens to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle by wearing khadi.
- As many as 7,500 women khadi artisans from various parts of the state spinned charkha live during the event.
- On the occasion, Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated a new office building of the Gujarat Rajya Khadi Gramodyog Board and foot-over bridge at the Sabarmati river. This iconic foot over-bridge connects East Ahmedabad with the West.
- An exhibition on the “Evolution of Charkhas”was also organised as part the Khadi Utsav which displayed 22 spinnig wheels used in the country since 1920. It also featured various modern spinning wheels with the latest innovations and technology. There was a live demonstration of the production of Ponduru Khadi of Andhra Pradesh.
Justice UU Lalit Takes Oath As 49th CJI
- Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu will administer His oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He succeeds Justice NV Ramana.
- Justice UU Lalit will be in office for 74 days, a tenure shorter than average. Justice Lalit was involved in some landmark judgments in past and will also handle some major cases in his tenure as Chief Justice. In past, he was involved in the landmark judgment in the Triple Talaq case.
- Justice UU Lalit studied at the Government Law College, Mumbai, and specialized in criminal law. He practiced in the Bombay High Court till 1985 and moved to Delhi in 1986.
Russia Blocks Joint Declaration On Nuclear Disarmament
- Russia on Saturday blocked the adoption of a joint declaration by a United Nations conference on nuclear disarmament. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is reviewed by its 191 signatories every five years, aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
- Russia objected to a draft text citing grave concern over military activities around Ukraine’s nuclear plants, in particular Zaporizhzhia. Participants in the last review in 2015 also failed to reach an agreement.
- The 2022 meeting, which had been due in 2020, was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The failure to agree on a joint declaration followed a four-week conference in New York.
- Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she was deeply disappointed at the lack of agreement.
- The US representative, Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, said the US regrets this outcome, and even more so on Russia’s actions that led us here on Saturday.
- The Non-Proliferation Treaty, backed by 190 countries in 1970, commits signatory countries including the US, Russia, France the UK, and China to reduce their stockpiles and bars others from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Judoka Wins Gold At World Cadet Judo Championships
- Indian judoka Linthoi Chanambam made history as she won the gold medal at the world cadet judo championships 2022 in the women’s -57kg category in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Herzegovina.
- The teenager from Manipur is the first Indian to win gold in the world judo championships in any category. The 16-year-old Linthoi Chanambam beat Brazilian Bianca Reis, the Pan-American junior champion, in the final by Waza-ari. Linthoi Chanambam won the National Championships in Chandigarh in November last year and struck gold in the 63kg at the Asian Cadet and Junior Championships in Bangkok, Thailand last month.
- She also won the silver medal at the 2021 Asia-Oceania Junior Championships and bronze at the 2021 Asia-Oceania Cadet Championships.
FIFA Lifts Suspension Of All India Football Federation
- FIFA has lifted the ban imposed on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) after the Supreme Court terminated the mandate of the Committee of Administrators. The decision has cleared the decks for India to host the Women’s U-17 World Cup scheduled to take place on 11-30 October.
- World football governing body FIFA had suspended the All India Football Federation on August 15 for undue influence from third parties.
- In a letter to AIFF, FIFA mentioned that Bureau of the FIFA Council decided to lift the suspension of the AIFF with immediate effect.
- The Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided to lift the suspension after FIFA received confirmation that the mandate of the committee of administrators that was set up to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee had been terminated and that the AIFF administration had regained full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs.
- FIFA also said that it will continue to monitor the situation and will support the AIFF in conducting its elections in a timely manner.
Neeraj Chopra Wins Lausanne Diamond League
- Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has won the javelin throw competition at the Lausanne Diamond League with a best throw of 89.08 metre. With his best throw at the event, Neeraj became the first Indian to clinch the prestigious Diamond League Meet title.
- Neeraj has thus qualified for the Diamond League Finals, which will take place in Zurich, Switzerland from September 7 and 8. He has also now qualified for the 2023 World Championships.
- Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has congratulated Javelin thrower Neeraj chopra on becoming the 1st Indian to win a Diamond League Meet. In a tweet, Mr Thakur lauded Neeraj for claiming the top spot at Lausanne in Switzerland with 89.08-meter throw.
- Appreciating the dedication of the Olympic Champion, Mr Thakur said that Neeraj is one of those athletes who sweats it out when no one is watching. He added that Neeraj prepares and plans to ensure the battle is already won on game day.
Satwik & Chirag Get Bronze At World Championships
- In badminton, Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty settled for a bronze at the BWF World Championships at Tokyo today.
- The world number 7 Indian pair lost to Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 22-20 18-21 16-21 in a pulsating 77-minute clash in the semi-finals.
