Vladimir Putin Offers Citizenship To Foreigners

  • President Vladimir Putin issued a decree allowing foreign nationals who fight for Russia in Ukraine to obtain Russian citizenship for themselves and their families.
  • The order said people who have signed contracts during what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine can apply to get Russian passports for themselves and their spouses, children and parents. They must provide documents showing that they signed up for a minimum of one year.
  • Those eligible include people who have signed contracts with the regular armed forces or other “military formations” – a description that could apply to groups such as the Wagner mercenary organisation.

India Has Not Sent Any Artillery Ammunition To Ukraine: MEA

  • India on Thursday trashed reports that claimed spotting certain Indian-origin artillery shells in Ukraine, and categorically asserted that it has not sent any ammunition to that country. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi has neither sent nor exported any artillery ammunition to Ukraine.
  • “We have also seen some media reports in this regard. We can categorically say that we have not sent any of this artillery ammunition to Ukraine,” he said at a media briefing.
  • On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a “useful” phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba focusing on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Kyiv’s peace formula and ways to advance bilateral ties.
  • The phone conversation came days after Jaishankar paid a five-day visit to Russia during which he held extensive talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and called on President Vladimir Putin.

Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi Takes Over As VCONS

  • Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM took over as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on 04 Jan 24. On taking over, the Flag Officer paid homage to the Bravehearts at the National War Memorial.
  • Prior to taking over as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, VAdm Dinesh K Tripathi served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.
  • An alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jul 1985. A Communication and Electronic Warfare specialist, he served on frontline warships of the Navy as Signal Communication Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer, and later as the Executive Officer and Principal Warfare Officer.

ISIS Claims Responsibility For Iran Twin Blasts

  • Islamic State claimed responsibility Thursday for two explosions that led to the death of over 100 people and wounded several others at a ceremony in Iran.
  • People had gathered at a cemetery to mark the fourth death anniversary of senior military commander General Qassem Soleimani who was killed by a US drone in 2020. He was in charge of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
  • Taking to X, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “We are shocked and saddened on the terrible bombings in the Kerman City of Iran. At this difficult time, we express our solidarity with the government and people of Iran.”

Defence Ministry Signs Contracts Worth ₹802 crore With Jupiter Wagons, BEML

  • The Ministry of Defence inked two contracts for procurement of 697 Bogie Open Military Wagons at ₹473 crore with Jupiter Wagons Limited and procurement of 56 Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment Mark II at a cost of ₹329 crore with BEML Ltd.
  • The BOM Wagons and MMME will be produced with equipment and sub-system sourced from indigenous manufacturers, giving a boost to the indigenous manufacturing and participation of the private sector in defence production, the defence ministry said in a statement.
  • BOM wagons, designed by Research Design and Standard Organization are specialist wagons used by the Indian Army for mobilisation of the Army units. BOM wagons are used to transport light vehicles, Artillery Guns, BMPs, Engineering Equipment etc. from their peacetime locations to operational areas.
  • MMME has been designed to operate cross country with complete load of stores and carry out marking of minefields with minimal time and manpower employment, as per the defence ministry.

Gen Naravane’s Memoir: Army Reviews Former Chief’s Book

  • The Indian Army is reviewing the memoir of its former chief General Naravane that discloses details of a conversation he had with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the night of August 31, 2020, following the movement of Chinese PLA tanks and troops in Rechin La on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.
  • Excerpts from the memoir, Four Stars of Destiny, were published by news agency Press Trust of India on December 18. Publisher Penguin Random House has been asked not to share excerpts or soft copies of the book until the review is over.
