Indian Navy Rescues All 21 Crew Of Hijacked Vessel Off Somalia Coast

  • After a high-voltage drama in the high seas, all 21 crew members including 15 Indian nationals from the hijacked vessel MV Lila Norfolk off Somalia coast were safely evacuated by the Indian Navy on Friday.
  • The attempt of hijacking by the pirates was probably abandoned with the forceful warning by the Indian Navy, MPA of interception by Indian Naval warship, the statement read.
  • INS Chennai is in the vicinity of MV and rendering support to restore the power generation and propulsion and commence her voyage to next port of call.
  • According to the officials, MARCOS didn’t found any pirates on the hijacked vessel. The rescue crew has informed that the pirates had fired at the ship during hijack attempt after which they all hid themselves in the citadel.
  • “MV was kept under continuous surveillance using Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Predator MQ9B and integral helos. The Indian Navy Marine Commandos present onboard the Mission Deployed warship boarded the MV and have commenced the Sanitisation,” the earlier statement from Indian Navy stated.

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has lauded the NCC for heralding a new era of youth development and national progress by channelising the youth’s energy for positivity. Describing NCC cadets as important stakeholders in the rise of Bharat, the Vice President said that they are role models for the nation’s youth.
  • Urging the cadets to maintain the highest standards of dignity, he exhorted them to work with enthusiasm, valor, and dedication to make our Bharat a truly developed nation & a world leader by 2047. “The qualities of discipline and patriotism must remain alive in your hearts, this is the greatest tribute we can pay to our motherland,” he told them.

North Korea Supplied Russia With Missiles For Ukraine Attacks: US

  • North Korea has provided Russia with ballistic missiles and missile launchers that were used in recent attacks on Ukraine, the White House said.
    • The Pyongyang-supplied missiles with ranges of around 900 kilometers (550 miles) were fired by Russia in two attacks within the past week, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.
    • The development underscored the need for the US Congress to pass a package of vital military aid for Ukraine, without which the pipeline of support will soon run dry, Kirby added.
    • Air defenses for Ukraine, which has come under a barrage of aerial attacks by Russia in recent days, were “absolutely” a priority, he said.
    • The United States and its allies will now raise the matter at the UN Security Council as it represents a breach of UN sanctions against North Korea, said Kirby.

Taiwan Says Chinese Balloons Threaten Aviation Safety

  • Taiwan’s defence ministry accused China of threatening aviation safety and waging psychological warfare on the island’s people with a recent spate of balloons spotted near or over the island, days before key Taiwanese elections.
  • The potential for China to use balloons for spying became a global issue in February when the United States shot down what it said was a Chinese surveillance balloon. China said the balloon was a civilian craft that accidentally drifted astray.
  • Taiwan is on high alert for Chinese military and political activity ahead of the Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary elections. It says China is exerting military and economic pressure in an attempt to interfere in the elections.

India-US Bilateral Defence Trade Has Grown To $ 25 Billion

  • The United States has solidified its role as a major supplier of defence equipment to India and has emerged as its largest military exercise partner, said Jennifer Larson, Consul-General of the US Consulate in Hyderabad.
  • Larson highlighted said the bilateral defence trade soared from nearly zero in 2008 to $25 billion by the end of 2023.
  • Speaking at an event, ‘Dialogues on deliverables to deliveries,’ Larson underscored the close collaboration between the US and Indian governments.
  • Priorities in this partnership included defence cooperation, fostering mutual prosperity, countering the climate crisis, upholding a free and secure Indo-Pacific, and maintaining a rules-based order grounded in international law and respect for human rights, she said.
  • Important defence agreements which provide the framework for interaction and cooperation are: Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (2016); Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (2018); Industrial Security Agreement (2019); and Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (2020). and Memorandum of Intent for Defense Innovation Cooperation (2018).
  • Military to Military exchanges take place through high-level visits, exercises, training courses and regular service-specific bilateral mechanisms. India has the largest number of military exercises with USA, which are growing in scale and complexity. Important bilateral exercises include Yudh Abhyas (Army), Vajra Prahar (Special Forces), Malabar (Navy), Cope India (Air Force), and Tiger Triumph (tri-services). Red Flag, RIMPAC, CUTLASS Express, Sea Dragon, and Milan are some multilateral exercises in which the two countries participate. INS Satpura was the first Indian naval ship to visit US mainland when it came to San Diego in August 2022 as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. India joined the multilateral Combined Maritime Force (CMF) based in Bahrain, as an Associate Partner in April 2022.
