Russia To Supply, License Production Of Igla Anti-Aircraft Missiles To India

  • Russia has signed a contract to supply Igla-S hand-held anti-aircraft missiles to India and allow production of the Igla there under licence, the Russian state news agency TASS quoted a top arms export official as saying on Tuesday.
  • The Igla-S is a man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) that can be fired by an individual or crew to bring down an enemy aircraft. The Igla-S is an improved variant with a longer interception range of up to 6-km.
  • India is the world’s largest arms importer and Russia remains its largest supplier despite the damage to the reputation of its army and weaponry from the war in Ukraine, where Russia has suffered numerous setbacks at the hands of a smaller but highly motivated.
  • According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia accounted for 45% of India’s arms imports between 2018 and 2022, with France providing 29% and the United States 11%.

Nirbhay Class Long-range Cruise Missiles To Be Part In All Three Defence Forces

  • In a significant boost to the firepower of the defence forces, all three defence forces will now have long-range cruise missiles of the Nirbhay class in their arsenal to strike targets at ranges of over 1,000 Km range.
  • The Nirbhay class long-range cruise missiles are being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) indigenously and are sub-sonic in speed.
  • The government had given clearance to induct the missile in the inventory of the other two services about two years ago. The subsonic Nirbhay class cruise missiles along with the supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles will be a deadly combination in the forces’ arsenal and will give options to the commanders in times of conflict.

42 Myanmar Soldiers Who Crossed Over Into India Held

  • Mizoram Police arrested at least 42 Myanmar soldiers in the last two days, after they illegally crossed into India at Zokhawthar border, the state police chief said in Aizawl on Tuesday. The soldiers were flown to Myanmar’s Tamu from Manipur’s Moreh in helicopters later, as per defence ministry insiders.
  • “Thirty-nine Myanmar army personnel entered Mizoram on Monday evening but surrendered to Mizoram Police. They were handed over to Assam Rifles following an order from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs,” Mizoram.
  • “Two Mi-17 helicopters were used to transport them. We were told two-three others entered Mizoram today (from Myanmar). They will be evacuated in a similar manner,” a defence official told this newspaper.
  • The trouble in Myanmar began in February 2021 after the military in the country had captured power through a coup. The pro-democracy forces are waging an armed struggle with the Myanmarese junta.

Indian Light Tank For High Altitude Operations To Be Ready This Month

  • The first indigenously designed and developed light tank that will be capable of operating at high altitudes to counter Chinese armoured deployments is likely to be ready for trials by this month end.
  • Developed in record time, the light tank will undergo a series of trials in December as work on the prototype is nearing completion. The need for a light tank – in the 25 tonne category – was felt after tensions built up in eastern Ladakh in 2020 and China deployed light armour at high altitude locations.
  • The Zorawar is an Indian light tank design. It is to become a light tank with a high power-to-weight ratio and substantial firepower, protection, surveillance and communication capabilities.
  • Indian Army’s Directorate General of Mechanised Forces, had on 22 April 2021, issued a Request for Information (RFI) in the domestic and international market for procurement of 354 Light Tank (Tracked) for the Indian Army (IA)

THE INDO-PACIFIC REGIONAL DIALOGUE 2023

  • The annual apex-level international conference of the Indian Navy – the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) – will be held in New Delhi from 15 to 17 November 2023. The event will include a Keynote Address by Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Hon’ble Vice President of India on 15 Nov 23.
  • The IPRD follows hard on the heels of the Goa Maritime Conclave 2023, which had been conducted by the Indian Navy from 29 to 31 Oct 2023 in Goa.
  • In terms of conceptual positioning, the Goa Maritime Conclave seeks to project the Indian Navy’s cooperative engagement at the strategic-operational level, by providing a forum for the Chiefs-of-Navy and Heads of Maritime Agencies in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The first two editions of IPRD were held in 2018 and 2019 respectively at New Delhi.  IPRD 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The third edition of IPRD was held in 2021 in online mode and the fourth edition was conducted, reverting to a physical format, at New Delhi in 2022.
  • The overarching theme of IPRD-2023 is “Geopolitical Impacts upon Indo-Pacific Maritime Trade and Connectivity”.
