The first test flight of the TEJAS MK-2, an enhanced model of the indigenous TEJAS light combat aircraft, is planned to take place in 2025, with a deal on cooperative manufacture of aero-engines being negotiated between India and the United States.
The Cabinet Committee on Security has given critical design approval and sanction, and production of the first prototype, which will take about 18 months, is expected to begin soon. The maiden flight could take place six months after the rollout. The ADA, which is part of the Department of Defence Research and Development, was looking for aero engines for the TEJAS MK-2 all over the world, with options including procuring power plants from France and the United Kingdom. According to preliminary estimates, the Indian Air Force (IAF) would get 200 MK-2 variants, which are categorised as 4.5 generation, single-engined medium-weight fighters capable of equipping 10 to 12 squadrons.

The MK-2 version also possesses a high level of stealth. In the case of this aircraft, stealth features are not driving the development process; rather, the focus is on operational capability and combat potential.

The MK-2 has a completely new design profile with more domestic material than the MK-1 model that is already in IAF service. It is also bigger and heavier, with a greater range and payload-carrying capability. Several changes requested by the IAF in the previous variant, as well as some new features, have been incorporated into the new design.
The indigenous component of the MK-2 model is planned to reach 90 per cent with domestically made aero engine, radar, and weaponry. Some parts, such as the ejection seat and sensors, would be imported.
Aside from ADA, the nodal agency for aircraft design and development, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the final production agency, the project involves about 300 collaborators, including public and private sector research and development establishments, industries, and academic institutions.
The Cabinet Committee on Security approved a budget of Rs 10,000 crore for the development of the MK-2 variant in September 2022. The lack of a sufficient power plant has caused the project to be delayed. According to some rumours, the MK-2 model will weigh 7.8 tonnes and have a 6.5-tonne weapons payload capacity. It is expected to replace the IAF’s MiG-29, Mirage-2000, and Jaguar fighters during the following 15 years.
