Indo-Africa Joint Exercise AFINDEX-2023

The second edition of the Africa-India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX 2023) kicked off Tuesday at the Indian Army’s Foreign Training Node (FTN) at Aundh Military Station in Pune. Humanitarian Mine Action and United Nations Peacekeeping Operations will be the focus of the 10-day exercise.

According to the Army, the multinational military exercise will promote the idea of Africa-India Militaries for Regional Unity (AMRUT) and will focus on incorporating the current dynamics of UN Peacekeeping Forces (UNPKF) through practical and comprehensive discussions and tactical exercises. In the exercise, as many as 24 African militaries are represented by contingents or teams of observers.

According to officials, the collaborative effort will also focus on achieving the desired interoperability and cohesive operational capability of troops from all participating nations, thereby reducing the risk of life and property during peacekeeping operations.

In March 2019, the Africa-India Field Training Exercise AFINDEX held its inaugural edition at the FTN. India has been one of the largest contributors of troops to UN Peacekeeping Operations around the world, and the country’s Army is regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts in mine removal operations.

Some war-torn African countries are dealing with the problem of landmines and unexploded ordnance, or UXO. According to officials, the joint exercise with India will greatly benefit the participating countries, and the Indian Army will learn from their experiences. The exercise is also being viewed as an important component of India’s diplomatic relations with African countries.
