155mm/52 Caliber Mounted Gun Systems: Under the leadership of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the procurement of Mounted Gun Systems (MGS) for the Indian Army earlier this year. This crucial purchase, authorised under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, includes the acquisition of 155mm/52 Caliber Mounted Gun Systems (MGS).
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) established major criteria for the system, including a maximum weight of 30 tonnes, a firing range of more than 38 kilometres, and compatibility with all 155mm ammunition already in service.

Two well-known Indian defence firms have entered the competition to produce 155mm/52 Caliber Mounted Gun Systems. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has announced the launch of its 155mm/52 Caliber Mounted Gun Systems, which is based on the Dhanush Artillery Gun.
Kalyani Group has also created 155mm/52 Caliber Mounted Gun Systems based on the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS). The Indian Army will conduct a thorough examination of both offerings, which will eventually determine which system is chosen.
The Indian Army is considering a large order of around 300 155mm/52 Caliber Mounted Gun Systems. This order indicates the military’s commitment to improving artillery capabilities and meeting modernization targets.
The Indian Army’s Field Artillery Rationalisation Plan sets an ambitious objective of acquiring 3,000 towed and self-propelled howitzers, with a significant number installed on 66 and 88-wheeled platforms. This effort seeks to modernise and improve the army’s artillery capabilities in order to ensure readiness to address increasing defence requirements.
