The Philippines Air Force (PAF) is now examining its options for obtaining a fleet of fighter jets in order to improve its defence capabilities. While the Indian-built HAL Tejas was once considered a viable option, subsequent developments indicate that the PAF is leaning towards purchasing used Gripen C/D aircraft from Sweden.
Why Gripen over Tejas?
The cost-effectiveness of the options offered is one of the key variables impacting the Philippine Air Force’s decision-making process. Because it is less expensive than the HAL Tejas, Saab’s supply of used Gripen C/D aircraft represents an appealing prospect. Due to the PAF’s budgetary limits, the Gripen C/D is a more financially viable choice, allowing the Philippines to acquire a larger fleet of fighter jets within their given resources.

The Gripen C/D also has the advantage of using the F-404 engine, which is also used in the PAF’s existing KAI FA-50PH fighter fighters. Because the PAF is already familiar with the engine’s performance and specifications, this commonality simplifies maintenance, training, and logistical support. The engine compatibility of the Gripen C/D with the PAF’s present fleet makes it an appealing choice, as it eliminates the need for further training and infrastructure modifications.
While the Philippine Air Force is now reviewing the Gripen C/D offer, negotiations between HAL and the Philippines regarding the Tejas are still ongoing. HAL executives remain confident and are working hard to clinch a contract for the indigenous fighter plane. However, with the Saab offer to line more closely with the PAF’s budgetary limits, the Tejas’ prospects may worsen.
