Group discussion is one of the most important stages of the SSB interview process. It usually takes place on the third day of the SSB interview.

A group discussion stage is basically a group task where the candidate is given a set of topics on which he has to speak for 10-15 minutes.

The group discussion is basically an informal discussion between the cadets on certain topics to come to some conclusion through group discussions. This task is usually done to observe each candidate’s performance, other values such as their confidence, their ability to work in a group. This activity is conducted and observed by the Group Task Officer (GTO). 

The Group discussion stage holds great importance because:-

  • It is the first impression of every candidate of board members.
  • Qualities like communication skills and the ability to listen to others are evaluated.
  • Check the confidence level of the candidates.
  • To evaluate the knowledge of current affairs possessed by each candidate. 
  • The ability to work as an individual and in a team is evaluated by the GTO.

  1. AUKUS 

AUKUS is a new trilateral security partnership for the Indo-Pacific, between Australia, the UK and the US. this is important in the context of the recent geopolitical changes. One of the major developments of this partnership is that the US will be sharing its nuclear submarine technology with Australia.

The main aim of this Trilateral Indo-Pacific partnership is to focus on Indo-Pacific, transferring nuclear submarine technology to the member states and Multi-Sectoral Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence, underwater warfare capabilities, and quantum tech.

  1. AUKUS vs Quad

AUKUS is a new trilateral security partnership between Australia, the UK and the US for the geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific. The main aims of this Trilateral Indo-Pacific partnership is to focus on Indo-Pacific, sharing nuclear submarine technology and Multi-Sectoral Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence.

Whereas QUAD is a strategic security dialogue between four states mainly the US, Australia, India and Japan. They exchange dialogues over 3Cs which are Climate, Covid-19 and communication and technology. QUAD is also dedicated to the Indo-Pacific.

Both the groups have some strategic aims and developmental values which will be beneficial in the upcoming times for humankind. 

  1. BRICS vs Quad 

BRICS is the acronym coined to amalgamate five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa and China. It was established in 2006 and from 2009, they are having an annual meet to discuss regional issues and other issues. The main aim of BRICS is Economic Cooperation. There are rapidly growing trade and investment flows between BRICS countries as well as economic cooperation activities across a range of sectors, People-to-People exchange, Political and Security Cooperation and creating a cooperation mechanism.

 Whereas Quad is a strategic dialogue stage for four countries daily Japan, US, India and Australia. The members of this group exchange dialogues over climate, vividness and technology. Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific is the major aim and concern of QUAD. It is also known as Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD). 

  1. Sri Lanka’s economic crisis

Sri Lanka is facing an economic crisis as the Forex reserves of the country are depleting. Food prices are soaring and depreciating currency. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared an economic emergency in Sri Lanka. He has called the financial team to handle the situation by  rationing the supply of various essential goods.

There are various reasons for this economic emergency. Some prominent reasons are :-

  • Tourism industry which makes a commendable contribution in the Sri Lankan economy is halted by Covid pandemic.
  • A forceful push towards organic farming of tea and other food items has led to a food crisis, which gave birth to an economic crisis. 
  • The decision of the Sri Lankan central bank to ban forward contracts and the spot trading of rupees at above 200 rupees to an American dollar have effects on essential supplies
  1. India-Afghanistan relations

India and Afghanistan have strong cultural and historical links. Both the states have good diplomatic relations. The Indian government has also helped Afghanistan with many infrastructure projects like the Salma Dam also known as Afghan-India Friendship Dam, Afghanistan parliament building and many more.  The National Defence Academy, Indian Military Academy, Officer’s Training Academy, Infantry School in Mhow and the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram train Afghan soldiers. What could be the future of India’s goodwill diplomacy in the future is a great topic for discussion. 

  1. Taliban rule in Afghanistan – Impact on India

The recent political development in Afghanistan, Taliban capturing the administrative throne of Afghanistan has put remarkable questions on the India- Afghan relations. The Taliban regime follows conservative and non-democratic values, contradictory to India. Will Taliban consider the goodwill relations and historical ties with India, or will it change the geopolitical scenario in South Asia?  Both states  also share the same platform in SAARC. 

  1. Syrian crisis

The Syrian crisis is a cross civil war in Syria waged between the Syrian Arab Republic commanded by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (along with domestic and foreign allies) and different domestic and foreign organizations opposing both the Syrian government and each other (in varying combinations). This grave situation has a lot of effects on the world economy. Hence, it is one of the most important topics for group Discussion.

  1. CPEC

Beginning in 2013, the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is a set of infrastructural projects being built throughout Pakistan. CPEC projects, which were originally valued at $47 billion, are now worth $62 billion as of 2020, with no current completion date. The CPEC have multiple effects on the regional security of India. 

  1. India – Russia relations

India and Russia have always shared a warm bond. The welfare approach of the Indian government after the independence of India has proved their inclination towards USSR, now Russia. With the recent rise of china and Russia’s inclination towards China, putting a big question mark on India’s Russia relationship. Russia is India’s defence technology provider, but the emergence of Russia-China friendship poses a threat to India’s regional security. This is a matter of discussion regarding India’s approach towards these changed scenarios.

  1. India’s performance in Global Hunger Index report

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a calculation that measures and tracks hunger globally, as well as by region and by country. It is prepared by European NGOs of Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe. The GHI report of 2021 has reported that India is at 106th position out of 116. This is a grave concern for India. The GHI report helps in identifying the lack and non- implementation of welfare schemes. 

  1. Mechanisms adopted to combat terrorism

Terrorism poses a high threat to humankind. It has already taken a lot of innocent lives and pace of the world. The countries have come up with their own agencies and strategies which help them in preventing any act of terrorism. At International level, many organizations are formed in order to combat terrorism. FAFT is one of such organizations that look after preventing the terror financing and money laundering by issuing global binding rules and orders.

  1. India – Iran Relations

India and Iran have very warm ties, except India’s  denial of support for the 1979 revolution. Both countries have significant trade ties, particularly in crude oil imports into India and diesel exports to Iran. Iran’s approach towards India and Afghanistan is highly questioned with the recent political change in Afghanistan. Nuclear disarmament is the act of reducing and eliminating the nuclear weapons processed by the states in order to make a nuclear-weapons-free world. Nuclear weapons pose a threat to humankind. To save future generations from its harmful and dangerous consequences, the concept of nuclear disarment has evolved. World politics runs on the approach of realism, which means that every state will first see their national interest. World peace is not based on the act of any single state, it can only be attained by cooperation of all the states towards a single goal which is world peace. If it can be attained without having nuclear weapons, then, nuclear disarment should be mandatory. And if the existence of  nuclear weapons are necessary for a peaceful co-existence, then nuclear disarment should  not be done. It’s on the candidate to give a balanced answer. 

  1. G20 – the future Ahead 

The G-20 summit is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). It is formed to address issues pertaining to  the global economy, such as international financial stability, sustainable development and  climate change mitigation. The G20 Rome summit is the upcoming sixteenth meeting, scheduled to take place in Rome, the capital city of Italy, on 30–31 October 2021. Major discussion topics would revolve around Covid, the economy and climate change.
