Day For The Preservation Of The Ozone Layer
- International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (informally and simply called Ozone Day) is celebrated on September 16 designed by the United Nations General Assembly.
- This designation had been made on December 19, 2000, in commemoration of the date, in 1987, on which nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
- In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
- The closure of the hole in the ozone layer was observed 30 years after the protocol was signed.
- Due to the nature of the gases responsible for ozone depletion their chemical effects are expected to continue for between 50 and 100 years.
World Patient Safety Day
- World Patient Safety Day (WPSD), observed annually on 17 September, aims to raise global awareness about patient safety and call for solidarity and united action by all countries and international partners to reduce patient harm.
- Patient safety focuses on preventing and reducing risks, errors and harm that happen to patients during the provision of health care.
- World Patient Safety Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
International Equal Pay Day
- “To build momentum around the urgent need to address the gender pay gap,” the United Nations observes the International Equal Pay Day on September 18 each year.
- The first International Equal Pay Day was observed in 2020 and this year marks the second edition of this international reminder.
- The observance represents the longstanding struggle of women for equal pay for the work of equal value.
- Currently, on a global average, women earn 23% less than men for work of the same value.

World Bamboo Day
- Every Year On September 18, World Bamboo Day Is Marked As A Day Of Celebration To Raise Global Awareness Of Bamboo.
- Bamboo Has Been An Everyday Usage Wood In Areas Where It Grows Naturally, But Its Use Does Not Seem To Be Sustainable Owing To Exploitation.
- The World Bamboo Organization Was Formally Recognised On September 18, 2009, During The 8th World Bamboo Congress In Bangkok.
- Delegates From Almost 100 Countries Attended The Event And Agreed To Designate September 18 As World Bamboo Day, Which Was Unanimously Supported By All Attendees.
- In Addition, The Day Is Also Marked As The Royal Thai Forestry Day.
- In 2009 On This Day, The Deputy Governor Of Bangkok As A Representative Of The Royal Thai Government, Ms Susanne Lucus, Executive Director Of WBO, And Mr Kamesh Salam, President Of WBO, Along With Others Named The Day As World Bamboo Day.
Kaushal Dikshant Samaroh
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi said history has been created on Saturday on the skill convocation of more than 9 lakh students at the Industrial Training Institute.
- In his address at the Kaushal Deekshant Samaroh of ITI on Vishwakarma Jayanti, Mr. Modi pointed out that the students with their skills are taking their first step on the path of innovation on the birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma.
- He said that taking inspiration from Lord Vishwakarma, government has started various skill-oriented schemes.
- Prime Minister said that the country is once again recognizing skills and giving equal emphasis on skill development. He added that around new 5,000 ITIs have been set up in the country in the last years whereas in the last 7 decades there were only 10,000 ITIs. He mentioned that more than 4 lakh new seats have also been added in ITIs in the last 8 years.
- The Prime Minister said that the government has also decided to establish 5000 skill hubs in the country to promote skill development at the school level. The Prime Minister further added that there is a special provision for the recruitment of youth in the army who have taken technical training from ITIs.
National Logistics Policy
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the National Logistics Policy that seeks to address challenges facing the transport sector and bring down the logistics cost of businesses to a single digit.
- Rolling out the policy at a function in New Delhi, Mr Modi said it is a significant step in the direction of India becoming a developed country.
- He said the policy is aimed at bringing down the cost of transportation of industrial products and time consumed.
- Prime Minister said, it will also prevent damage to agricultural products by providing faster transportation.
- Mr Modi said various road projects, such as Bharatmala and Sagarmala, were launched by him after becoming the Prime Minister to improve connectivity.
- He said, speeding up the work of the dedicated freight corridor is also a move in that direction.
- Mr Modi said the Unified Logistics Interface Platform will bring all digital services related to the transportation sector into a single portal, freeing the exporters from a host of very long and cumbersome processes.
- Similarly, under the policy, a new digital platform – Ease of Logistics Services – has also been started.
- He said, PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan will work in tandem with the National Logistics Policy.
East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meeting
- Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Anupriya Patel, attended East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meeting in Siem Reap City of Cambodia.
- Ms. Patel reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening the EAS as an ASEAN-led organisation and supporting the EAS Forum in strengthening regional economic architecture.
- She acknowledged the pivotal role of EAS in strengthening multilateralism and promoting peace, stability, and economic prosperity in the region.
- She also reiterated India’s willingness to collaborate with East Asian partners in the production of vaccines, generic drugs and medical technologies used for treatment of COVID patients.
- The meeting saw representation from all 10 ASEAN countries as well as eight partner countries including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and the US.
USAID And UNICEF Launches “Door Se Namaste”
- The US Agency for International Development and UNICEF launched the Doordarshan, and YouTube series titled Door Se Namaste at a function held in New Delhi.
- Door Se Namaste is a new television series that promotes healthy behaviors in a post-pandemic world.
- It is a fictional Hindi series developed in an entertainment education format highlighting the challenges of a post-pandemic world and promoting the adoption of healthy behavior and practices.
- The program will be telecast on every Sunday from 11 AM to 12 noon.
Cheetahs Flown In From Namibia
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi released wild Cheetahs, which had become extinct in India, in Kuno National Park. Cheetahs that have been brought from Namibia are being introduced in India under Project Cheetah, which is the world’s first inter-continental large wild carnivore translocation project.
- Out of the eight Cheetahs there are five females and three males. Mr. Modi released Cheetahs at two release points in Kuno National Park.
- On the occasion, he also interacted with Cheetah Mitras, Cheetah Rehabilitation Management Group, and students at the venue.
- The release of wild Cheetahs by the Prime Minister is part of his efforts to revitalize and diversify India’s wildlife and its habitat. The cheetah was declared extinct from India in 1952.
