Thales Going To Hire Over 500 People In India This Year

  • The French defence major company Thales is going to hire more than 12,000 people worldwide in 2023 to support its growth trajectory and over 500 people in India for its engineering centres in Bengaluru & Noida.
  • In 2023, Thales plans to hire more than 12,000 new employees to support its strong growth trajectory in its three core markets: Aerospace, Defence and Security, and Digital Identity and Security.
  • The Group will be hiring all over the world and expects to take on 5,500 new employees in France, 550 in India, 1,050 in the United Kingdom, 600 in Australia, and 540 in the United States.
  • Thales is recruiting people in a range of job profiles for its engineering operations in India in every discipline across all its business segments, and in particular for its sites in Noida and Bengaluru.

Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi Takes Over as FOC, WNC

  • Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM took over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Western Naval Command (WNC) from Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC at impressive Ceremonial Parade held at INS Shikra on 28 Feb 23.
  • On taking over, the Flag Officer paid homage to all personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the Nation by placing a floral wreath at the Gaurav Stambh (the Victory at Sea Memorial at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai).
  • Prior to taking over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Vice Admiral Tripathi served as the Chief of Personnel at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy).
  • An alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jul 1985. A Communication and Electronic Warfare specialist, he served on frontline warships of the Navy as Signal Communication Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer, and later as the Executive Officer and Principal Warfare Officer of Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mumbai.
  • He commanded Indian Naval Ships Vinash, Kirch and Trishul. He has also held various important operational and staff appointments which include Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet at Mumbai, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director Network Centric Operations and Principal Director Naval Plans at New Delhi. On promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at IHQ MoD(N) and as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
  • On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral in Jun 2019, the Flag Officer was appointed as Commandant of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. He was the Director General of Naval Operations from Jul 2020 to May 2021, a period that witnessed a high tempo of Naval Maritime Operations. He ensured that the Navy remained a combat-ready, cohesive and credible force, ready to address a host of complex security challenges despite the round severity of the COVID Pandemic.
  • The Admiral is a graduate of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, where he was awarded the Thimmaiya Medal. He also attended Naval Higher Command Course and Naval Command College at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Islands in 2007-08, where he won the Prestigious Robert E Bateman International Prize.
  • Vice Admiral Tripathi is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nausena Medal for devotion to duty. He is also a keen sportsman and avidly follows tennis, badminton, and cricket. The Flag Officer is a keen student of international relations, military history, and the art & science of leadership. He is married to Mrs Shashi Tripathi, an artist and homemaker and the couple has one son, who is a practising lawyer.

DRDO Celebrated National Science Day

  • Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) celebrated National Science Day 2023 through lectures, orations and open house activities in its laboratories and establishments on February 28, 2023. A special function was organised by Defence Science Forum at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi. Secretary of Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat presided over the function. Director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi Prof Rangan Banerjee was the Chief Guest, with Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri Dr G Satheesh Reddy also in attendance.
  • The theme of this year’s National Science Day was ‘Global Science for Global Well-being’. The DRDO Chairman greeted the scientific community on the occasion and spoke about the importance of commitment towards science for delivering quality products/technology to the services.
  • Addressing the gathering, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri stated that scientific research is very essential to develop first-of-its-kind products. He stressed that the focus should be on basic science so that newer state-of-art technologies and systems can be developed.
  • Director, IIT, Delhi delivered a lecture on ‘International Collaborations in Science and Engineering – A View from IIT Delhi’, wherein, he brought out the importance of global collaboration in the field of scientific research for finding solutions to global well-being. He emphasised the need to identify synergies and create an enabling ecosystem for the translation of ideas. He highlighted the successful joint research programme of DRDO and IIT Delhi which has led to successful research endeavours. He highlighted that DRDO should act as a catalyst and thought leader and facilitator in key strategic areas of research.
  • A total of 39 oration papers were received from various DRDO labs/establishments, out of which three papers were selected for presentation at the event as DRDO Science Day Orations. Shri Hari Singh, Sc ‘F’ from Hyderabad. Shri Laxman Mawani, Sc ‘E’, from Bengaluru and Shri Kumar Vyonkesh Mani, Sc ‘E’ from Delhi delivered the presentations on their respective areas of work in the area of defence research.
  • Dr Banerjee awarded the orators with a medal and certificate for their presentation. DRDO Science Spectrum, the compilation of all the scientific papers received (for National Science Day 2023), from various DRDO labs/assets was released on the occasion.
  • National Science Day is celebrated on 28th February every year to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ in 1928 by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, which led to the Nobel Prize being awarded to him in 1930. The purpose of celebrating this day is to enhance scientific temper, popularisation of science and encourage innovative activities by infusing scientific temperament in the masses and creating a positive scientific research culture.
  • Defence Science Forum (DSF) is a platform of DRDO where scientists of various disciplines interact to foster fellowship, exchange of ideas with luminaries of different disciplines and feasibility and planning of all inter-disciplinary projects where expert opinion is required.

Wildlife Board Approves IAF Mountain Radar In Ladakh

  • With the National Board of Wildlife giving its approval, the decks have finally been cleared for the induction of the IAF’s mountain radar in Ladakh, just off the proposed new IAF base. A slew of new operational tracks to ensure better strategic connectivity to the critical boundary trijunction off Dokalam has also been approved.
  • Likely to come up soon, is an ambitious and long-debated plan to set up a High-Altitude Air to Ground Firing range in Ladakh to ensure battle readiness.
  • The new base will be built on 500 hectares of land in the Changthang sanctuary area, right next to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • The Changthang sanctuary area is a cold desert sanctuary in the Leh district. It is home to Tibetan wild Ass, Kiang and the rare black-necked cranes.
  • Currently, the IAF’s key air base in Ladakh is located at Leh.

ISRO Successfully Tests Chandrayaan-3 Rocket Engine Ahead Of June Launch

  • The flight acceptance hot test of the CE-20 cryogenic engine that will power the cryogenic upper stage of the launch vehicle for the Chandrayaan-3 mission was successfully conducted, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation.
  • The hot test was carried out for a planned duration of 25 seconds at the High Altitude Test Facility of the ISRO Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu on February 24, the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency said.
  • All the propulsion parameters during the test were found satisfactory and closely matched with predictions,” an ISRO statement said on Monday.
  • The cryogenic engine will be further integrated with the propellant tanks, stage structures and associated fluid lines to realise the fully-integrated flight cryogenic stage, ISRO said.
  • Earlier this year, the Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully underwent EMI/EMC test at U R Rao Satellite Centre here.
  • EMI-EMC (Electro – Magnetic Interference/ Electro – Magnetic Compatibility) test is conducted for satellite missions to ensure the functionality of the satellite subsystems in the space environment and their compatibility with the expected electromagnetic levels, it was noted.
