Indo-Pacific Economic Framework For Prosperity
- Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reaffirmed the desire of both India and the USA to continue to work towards strengthening economic relations and strategic partnership. He was addressing an event hosted by US-India Strategic Partnership Forum in Los Angeles.
- Touching upon the growth story that is unfolding in India, Mr. Goyal mentioned that two Free Trade Agreements, and FTAs have already been finalized this year and hoped for the conclusion of at least two more FTAs by the end of this year.
- The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) was launched by United States (US) President Biden in Tokyo on May 23, 2022. The IPEF has four pillars: Trade; supply chains; clean energy, decarbonization and infrastructure; tax, and anti-corruption.
‘Vande Bharat 2’ By Indian Railways
- Indian Railways will be introducing the new avatar of the high-speed train Vande Bharat namely Vande Bharat 2. It will be equipped with more advancements and improved features like 0 to 100 Kmpl speed in just 52 seconds, maximum speed up to 180 Kmph, the lesser weight of 392 tons instead of 430 tons, and WI-FI content on demand.
- New Vande Bharat will also have 32-inch LCD TVs which were 24-inch in earlier versions. 15 percent more energy efficient ACs with dust-free clean air cooling of the traction motor will make the travel more comfortable. Side recliner seat facility which is being provided to Executive Class passengers will now be made available for all classes.
- In the new design of Vande Bharat Express, a photo-catalytic ultraviolet air purification system is installed in the roof-mounted Roof Mounted Package Unit for air purification.
Cabinets Take Decision On Policy Of Broken Rice
- The government has said the export policy of broken rice has been amended to ensure adequate domestic availability.
- This has been done in order to ensure adequate availability of broken rice for consumption by the domestic poultry industry and for other animal feedstock and to produce ethanol for successful implementation of EBP (Ethanol Blending Programme).
- About 50-60 Lakh Metric Tonnes of broken rice is produced annually in India which is mainly used as poultry feed and feed for other animals. It is also used as a feedstock by the grain-based distilleries for producing ethanol which is supplied to Oil Marketing Companies for blending with petrol.
Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
- President Droupadi Murmu has said that Jan Bhagidari is the key to eliminate tuberculosis from the country. The President was speaking after virtually launching the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan to reinvigorate the mission of TB elimination from the country by 2025.
- During the event, President Murmu also launched the Ni-kshay 2.0 initiative, a portal to provide a platform for donors to provide various forms of support to those undergoing TB treatment.
- She said that under the world’s biggest Ayushman Yojana, the wellness centres have been especially geared to work towards the elimination of Tuberculosis.
- Emphasizing on the commitment of New India to fighting against TB, President Murmu said that India’s response to COVID-19 is a testimony to India’s seriousness on the matter. She emphasised on the importance of role of public representatives in the success of the cause.
2nd India-Japan 2 Plus 2 Ministerial Dialogue
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held the second India-Japan 2 plus 2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo with Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Defence Minister Hamada Yasukazu.
- A Joint Statement issued following the meeting said, the Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based global order that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations. They emphasized the need for all countries to seek peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law without resorting to threat or use of force or any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo.
- The Ministers highlighted their commitment to a common strategic goal of achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific, that is inclusive and resilient, based on the rule of law and free from coercion. They also reiterated their strong support for ASEAN’s unity and centrality and their full support for the ‘ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific’ which upholds the principles such as the rule of law, openness, freedom, transparency, and inclusiveness.
5th India-US Maritime Security Dialogue
- The 5th India-US Maritime Security Dialogue was held in New Delhi.
- During the Dialogue, the two sides discussed developments in the global maritime domain, bilateral maritime cooperation endeavors, regional support initiatives, and collaborative efforts such as Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness.
- They affirmed their shared desire to enhance maritime security internationally and strengthen cooperation towards a free, open, and inclusive maritime order that would support security, inclusive growth, and prosperity.
- During the dialogue, the officials had an opportunity to discuss regional issues pertaining to South Asia, Indian Ocean Region, and the Indo-Pacific.
- The two sides agreed to remain engaged with the objective of further enhancing the depth and substance of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Volker Turk Appointed As Next UN High Commissioner For Human Rights
- Volker Turk of Austria has been appointed as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Turk following approval by the General Assembly.
- The new High Commissioner is currently coordinating global policy work as an Under-Secretary-General in the UN’s Executive Office.
- Previously, he was the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UN refugees, UNHCR, in Geneva where he played a key role in the development of the landmark Global Compact on Refugees.
- Turk will succeed Michelle Bachelet of Chile.
National Maritime Heritage Complex To Build In Lothal
- Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is building the National Maritime Heritage Complex at the historic Indus Valley civilisation region of Lothal in Gujarat with a total cost of three thousand five hundred crores rupees.
- A first-of-its-kind complex in the country, this centre will showcase India’s rich and diverse maritime heritage. The foundation stone for this project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a statement today said that it is one of the major projects under Sagarmala scheme of the Ministry, which has an edutainment approach.
- He said, by using the latest technology maritime heritage will be projected in a user-friendly manner to spread awareness among people. The commissioning of Phase 1A of this project is targeted to be completed by March 2024. Government of Gujarat is playing vital role in this project.
