GI Tag For Mithila Makhana

  • The government has recently awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Mithila Makhana.
  • Mithila Makhana or Makhan (botanical name: Euryale ferox Salisb.) is a special variety of aquatic fox nuts cultivated in the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal.
  • Makhana is one of the three prestigious cultural identities of Mithila.
  • Pan, Makhan, and Machh (fish) are the three prestigious cultural identities of Mithila.
  • It is also very famous in the Kojagara festival of Maithil Brahmins celebrated for newly married couples.
  • Makhana contains protein and fiber, along with micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus.

Kerala Reported Tomato Flu

  • Some parts of Kerala reported Tomato Flu among children under five years of age.
  • The infection has been named ‘tomato flu’ because of the red, painful blisters that appear on a patient’s body and gradually enlarge to the size of a tomato.
  • The infectious disease is caused by intestinal viruses and is rare in adults as they usually have immune systems strong enough to defend them from the virus.
  • Tomato flu is very contagious, and children are at increased risk of exposure to tomato flu as viral infections are common in this age group and spread is likely to be through close contact.
  • This flu is a self-limiting one and there is no specific drug for this.

3rd Edition Of Roads And Highways Summit

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the 3rd Edition of Roads and Highways Summit at FICCI, Federation House.
  • Addressing the inaugural session, the Minister said that India has the second highest road network in the world and this is the time to expand road network and take it to two lakh kilometres by the end of 2024.
  • Currently, 90 per cent of passenger and 80 per cent goods traffic is catered by roads. He talked about the flagship programe of Bharatmala Pariyojna and increased budget for road infrastructure.
  • Addressing the gathering, Mr Gadkari talked about the challange of reducing the logistics cost from 16 per cent to 10 per cent.
  • He said that to achieve a reduction in logistics cost, we need an integrated approach of waterways, railway, roads and aviation. He also emphasised about reducing the use of petrol and diesel.
  • He stressed upon the use of LNG and ethanol, methanol, hydrogen as alternatives to petrol and diesel as they are cost-effective.

GARBA For UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List

  • India has nominated the dance form Garba to be inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Director Eric Falt said that after the inclusion of ‘Durga Puja’ on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage representative last year, India has now nominated ‘Garba’ for 2022.
  • He said, the next meeting of UNESCO is in November & hopefully there will be yet another beautiful Indian festival Garba inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
  • India was elected by UNESCO to serve on the distinguished Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in July. India garnered a whopping 110 votes from 155 State Parties that finalized its selection.

India Wins 16 Medals At U-20 World Championships

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian wrestling team on winning 16 medals at the U-20 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
  • Giving their best-ever performance, Team India earned a total of 16 medals across different categories at the U-20 World Wrestling Championships, which included a gold medal, four silver medals, and 11 bronze medals.
  • During the Championships, 17-year-old wrestler, Antim Panghal became the first ever Indian woman to earn a gold medal finish in the U-20 world wrestling championships.
  • India finished 2nd in the overall women’s team ranking while finishing 3rd in the Men’s Freestyle Team event.

14th Asian U-18 Championship

  • Indian men’s volleyball team won the bronze medal by defeating Korea 3-2 in the 14th Asian U-18 Championship in Tehran.
  • In the preliminary league match too, India defeated Korea but lost to Iran in the semifinal.
  • The Indian U-18 team has qualified along with Japan, Iran, and South Korea for the FIVB World U-19 Men’s Volleyball Championship.
  • Japan clinched the gold after beating Iran in the final match in straight sets.

Fahmida Azim Wins 2022 Pulitzer Prize

  • Bangladesh-born Fahmida Azim working for the Insider online magazine of United States has been selected for the 2022 Pulitzer prize under the category of Illustrated Reporting and Commentary.
  • She is among the four journalists including Anthony Del Col, Josh Adams and Walt Hickey of Insider being published from New York, selected for their work on the Chinese oppression of the Uyghurs. The work ‘I escaped a Chinese internment Camp’ has illustrations by Fahmida Azim.
  • The citation for the award said that they have been selected for the prize for using graphic reportage and the comics medium to tell a powerful yet intimate story of the Chinese oppression of the Uyghurs, making the issue accessible to a wider public.
