Later this year, LCA-Tejas Will Receive ” Fox two ASRAAM”

  • The LCA-Tejas Mk1A Technology demonstrator will soon be cleared to fire Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) and will enter service across the Tejas Mk1 fleet in 2024, providing a significant boost to the jet’s Close Combat capabilities.
  • ASRAAM Block-VI comes with New algorithms that have been developed to improve ASRAAM’s ability to acquire and maintain lock-on to target aircraft despite the use of next-generation infrared countermeasures.
  • The LCA-Tejas is already equipped with ” Fox two” infrared-guided missiles such as the R-73 and Python-5, but the decision to equip it with ASRAAM was made to phase out the R-73 from the fleet due to obsolesce of the missile technology and Russia’s lack of upgrades.
  • Bharat Dynamics Ltd and MBDA, a European arms manufacturer, have collaborated to establish an Indian facility for final assembly, integration, and testing of advanced short-range air-to-air missiles. The facility is expected to open later this year, and the immediate rate of production of the missile in the country will be adequate for it to be equipped on Tejas Mk1A fleet first, and later on older Mk1 fleet, with plans to equipped it on Mk2 and TEDBF fighter jets as well.
