Army, IAF Carry Out Mega Exercise In Eastern Sector 

  • The strategic forces of the Indian Army and the Air Force carried out a multi-domain exercise in the Eastern sector amid the lingering border row in eastern Ladakh, people familiar with the matter.
  • The exercise aimed to validate joint plans for strategic airlift of specialised forces employing IAF’s fixed and rotary wing platforms by landing and dropping in designated areas.
  • “The exercise also demonstrated speed, agility and lethality of the specialised troops showcasing their ability to rapidly deploy into a hostile environment,” said one of the people cited above.

Exercise Orion 2023                               

  • An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent will depart tomorrow for France, to participate in Exercise Orion at Mont-de-Marsan, an Air Force base of the French Air and Space Force (FASF).
  • The exercise will be conducted from 17 April to 05 May 2023, with the IAF Contingent comprising four Rafale, two C-17, two ll-78 aircraft and 165 air warriors. This would be the first overseas exercise for the IAF’s Rafale aircraft.
  • Besides the IAF and the FASF, Air Forces from Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain and United States of America would also be flying in this multilateral exercise. Participation in this exercise would further enrich the employment philosophy of the India Air Force, by imbibing the best practices from other Air Forces.

Amit Shah Reviews JK Security Situation 

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Line of Control and International Border, sources said.
  • Shah was given a detailed presentation on the prevailing law-and-order situation in Jammu and Kashmir by security officials of the central government and the union territory administration.
  • NSA Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, J&K DG of Police Dilbag Singh and other senior officials attended the meeting.
  • The situation along the Line of Control and International Border, infiltration bids from across the border and attempts to target minority community members were discussed at the meeting.

Neeraj Chopra To Begin Diamond League Title Defence In May 

  • Javelin thrower and reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will begin his Diamond League title defence in the Doha meeting on May 5.
  • “Neeraj Chopra – the Indian national record holder with a best of 89.94m – will join world champion Anderson Peters and Olympic silver Medallist Jakub Vadlejch in a much-anticipated javelin competition at the Doha Meeting.
  • The 2023 Diamond League will include 14 meets, ranging from Doha to a single final over two days in Eugene (September 16-17).

North Korea Says It Tested New Solid-fuel “Hwasong-18” ICBM 

  • North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, said Friday that the recent launch of its new solid-fuel “Hwasong-18” intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) considerably strengthened the country’s nuclear counterattack stance, Yonhap News Agency.
  • The new ICBM would “radically promote the effectiveness of its nuclear counterattack posture and bring about a change in the practicality of its offensive military strategy.”
  • “The aim of the test fire was to confirm the performance of the high-thrust solid-fuel engines for multi-stage missiles and the reliability of the stage-jettisoning technology and various functional control systems,” the KCNA said.

China’s Arms Exports Declined By 23 Percent In Last 10 Years 

  • China’s arms exports have dropped over the last two five-year periods, statistics released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed. SIPRI data showed that arms exports from 2018-2022 dropped by 23 percent compared with 2013-2017.
  • Pertinently, China has joined a growing list of nations that have increased their defence budgets, with a 7.2 percent rise in its military expenditure, the fastest pace in four years, to about 224.3 USD billion for 2023.
