Exercise Cyclone – I
- The first-ever joint exercise between the special forces of the Indian Army and the Egyptian Army named “Exercise Cyclone-I” is in progress at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan since 14 January 2023.
- Exercise “Cyclone – I” is the first exercise of its kind bringing the special forces of both nations on a common platform. The 14-day-long exercise which is being carried out in the deserts of Rajasthan engages both the contingents to advance special forces skills such as Sniping, Combat Free Fall, Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Target Designation, sharing of information on weapons, equipment, innovations, etc.
- The exercise aims to bolster defence cooperation between the two nations and focus on sharing professional skills and interoperability of Special Forces in desert terrain while undertaking counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, raids and other special operations.

Defence Relations
- There was close cooperation between the Air Forces, with efforts at jointly developing a fighter aircraft in the 1960s.
- IAF pilots had also trained Egyptian pilots from the 1960s until 1984.
- Most of the current defence cooperation is determined by Joint Defence Committee (JDC) activities.
- Egypt participated in the Multinational Training Exercise for friendly African countries held at Pune in 2019. The first ever IAF-EAF Joint Tactical Air Exercise Dessert Warrior, was held in 2021.
- The first ever Special Forces exercise “Cyclone 1” between India and Egypt planned in Jodhpur from 8th – 22nd January 2022 stands postponed.
Overseas Deployment of ICGS SHAURYA And RAJVEER to Bangladesh
- Indian Coast Guard Ships ICGS Shaurya and Rajveer were on a six-day visit to Chattogram, Bangladesh from 13 to 19 January 2023 to enhance the cooperative engagements and interoperability under the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Indian and Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG).
- The visit holds significance in strengthening the bilateral relationships with BCG which has grown manifold over the years to ensure safe, secure and clean seas in the Region. The fruitful engagements with various senior officials and personnel of BCG during the visit s further enhanced the safety and security of the fishermen and mariners.
- During the visit, the Pollution Response Team of the Indian Coast Guard conducted a five-day International Maritime Organisation Level I course on Pollution Response for the first time in Bangladesh for 20 BCG personnel. The BCG personnel were also imparted training on operations of PR equipment onboard ICGS Ships Shaurya and Rajveer.
- A joint exercise was held at sea with BCG ships to validate the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the area of environmental protection and Search and Rescue at the end of the visit. The enthusiasm and keen interest displayed by senior officials and trainees will certainly bolster the marine environmental protection initiatives by the respective Governments in the Region.
Woman Naval Air Operations Officer To Lead Indian Navy’s Contingent At R-day Parade
- Lt Commander Disha Amrith, a woman naval air operations official posted at a strategic base, will lead the Indian Navy’s Republic Day contingent of 144 young sailors and its tableau will showcase the ‘Nari Shakti’ in force.
- Navy officials said three women and five men Agniveers will also participate in the parade at Kartavya Path.
- Besides Amrith, another woman officer — Sub-Lt Valli Meena S — will be among the three platoon commanders of the naval contingent.
- The theme of the naval tableau would be ‘Indian Navy — Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive and Future Proof,’ said Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, the Controller Personnel Services (CPS).
- In the rear section of the tableau, three models of autonomous unmanned systems being developed indigenously under the IDEX-Sprint Challenge are displayed. The Indian Navy aims to induct at least 75 technology/product as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The sprint initiative were launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister during the Naval Innovation and Indignation Organisation Seminar on 18 Jul 22. These products are being developed under innovation for defence excellence scheme of the Ministry of Defence and Technology Development Acceleration Cell of the Indian Navy.

India Requires Two SSBNs On Patrol For The Nuclear Triad: Think Tank
- In this report, Anubhav Shankar Goswami, a Research Associate at the Centre for Air Power Studies in New Delhi, stated that for India to have a credible second-strike capability, at least two nuclear-powered ballistic missiles carrying intermediate-range SLBM on patrol in deep sea are required.
- The replacement of India’s first nuclear submarine’s nuclear fuel rods is expected to take 18-24 months. India’s second Arihant class submarine has been spotted conducting sea trials, but it is unclear whether it has begun patrolling duties.
- India’s third nuclear submarine called S4 which is enlarged Arihant class submarine with additional 1000-tons was seen on outer decks but it is not clear if it is ready for sea trials yet. Sister class of S4 called S4 Star should have been ready this year but again there is no clarity.
- INS Arihant, designated S2 Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarine, is the lead ship of India’s Arihant class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. The 6,000 tonne vessel was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel project at the Ship Building Centre in the port city of Visakhapatnam.
