What is Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO):
- The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Is A Eurasian Political, Economic And Security Organization. It Is The World’s Largest Regional Organization, Covering Approximately 60% Of The Area Of Eurasia, 40% Of The World Population, And More Than 30% Of Global GDP.
- It Was Created In 2001. The SCO Charter Was Signed In 2002 And Entered Into Force In 2003. Prior To The Creation Of SCO In 2001, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, And Tajikistan Were Members Of The Shanghai Five.
- Shanghai Five (1996) Emerged From A Series Of Border Demarcation And Demilitarization Talks Which The Four Former Soviet Republics Held With China To Ensure Stability Along The Borders.
- Following The Accession Of Uzbekistan To The Organization In 2001, The Shanghai Five Was Renamed The SCO. India And Pakistan Became Members In 2017. On 17th September 2021, It Was Announced That Iran Would Become A Full Member Of The SCO.

- The Regional Anti-terrorist Structure (RATS) Is A Permanent Organ Of The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) With Its Headquarters In Tashkent, Uzbekistan.Its Objective Is To Help Members States Fight Combat, Extremism, Terrorism And Separatism.
- The RATS Was Formed In The June 2004 Summit Of The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (Sco) Which Was Held In Tashkent, Uzbekistan. RATS Is Engaged In Furthering Cooperation And Ties Between Member Countries On Concerns Of Terrorism, Security, Drug Trafficking, Crime, And Cyberwarfare.
- The Head Of RATS Is Elected For A Three-year Term. All The Member States Also Have Their Own Representatives At RATS. With RATS, SCO Had Foiled Terror Plots To The Tune Of 600. It is Also Reported That Through RATS, 500 Terrorists Were Extradited.

- The SCO Covers 40%of The Global Population, Nearly 20% Of The Global GDP, And 22% Of The World’s Land Mass.
- The SCO Has A Strategically Important Role In Asia Due To Its Geographical Significance – This Enables It To Control Central Asia And Limit The American Influence In Region.
- It Is Seen As Counterweight To The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
- Combating Terrorism, Extremism Separatism; Drug And Weapons Trafficking, Illegal Immigration, Etc.
- Despite Being Geographically Close, The Rich Diversity In Member’s History, Backgrounds, Language, National Interests, Form Of Government, And Culture Makes The SCO Decision Making Challenging.
- Rivalry Within The Grouping Is Not Allowing SCO To Work At Its Fullest.

- Helps Indian Policy Of Pursuing “Multi-Alignments”.
