Defence Current Affairs 23 December 2022 

India Clears Defence Purchase Plan Worth Rs 84,328 Crore    

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, in its meeting held on December 22, 2022, has accorded approval for Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 24 Capital Acquisition Proposals. These proposals include six for Indian Army, six for Indian Air Force, 10 for Indian Navy and two for Indian Coast Guard for a total value of Rs 84,328 crore. It is pertinent to mention that 21 proposals, worth Rs 82,127 crore (97.4%), are approved for procurement from indigenous sources. This unprecedented initiative of DAC will not only modernise the Armed Forces but also provide substantial boost to the defence industry to achieve the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
  • The AoNs accorded will equip the Indian Army with platforms and equipment such as Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles, Light Tanks and Mounted Gun System providing a quantum jump to Indian Army’s operational preparedness. Proposals approved also includes procurement of Ballistic Helmets, with enhanced protection level, for our soldiers.    
  • Approvals for procurement of Naval Anti-Ship Missiles, Multi-Purpose Vessels and High Endurance Autonomous Vehicles will further enhance maritime strength giving boost to Indian Navy’s capabilities.
  • Indian Air Force will be further strengthened with enhanced lethal capabilities by induction of new range of missile system, Long Range Guided Bombs, Range Augmentation Kit for conventional bombs and advanced surveillance systems.
  • Procuring Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels for Indian Coast Guard will enhance surveillance capability in the coastal areas to new heights.

17th Round Of India-China Corps Commander Level Meeting                               

  • The 17th round of India- China Corps Commander Level Meeting was held at Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Chinese side on 20th December 2022.
  • Building on the progress made after the last meeting on 17th July 2022, the two sides exchanged views on the resolution of the relevant issues along the LAC in the Western Sector in an open and  constructive manner. They had a frank and in-depth discussion, keeping in line  with the guidance provided by the State Leaders to work for the resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest which would help in restoration of peace and tranquility along the LAC in the Western Sector and enable progress in bilateral relations.
  • In the interim, the two sides agreed to maintain security and stability in the Western Sector. The two sides agreed to stay in close contact, maintain dialogue through military and diplomatic channels, and work out a mutually acceptable resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest.

French Defence Firm CEO Calls On CDS Anil Chauhan, to Discuss Mutual Defence Cooperation  

  • In order to give a boost to the Defence partnership between India and France, Pierre-Eric Pommellet, the Chairman and CEO of French Naval Group, called on India’s CDS General Anil Chauhan on Wednesday, December 21.
  • According to the Defence Ministry, the two discussed the ongoing defence collaboration between the two countries and explored further opportunities under India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
  • The Naval Group is a major French industrial group specialising in naval defence design, development and construction with its headquarters in Paris.
  • Defence Cooperation: Both countries have a defence dialogue at the Ministerial level.
  • The three services have regular defence exercises, viz.
  • Exercise Shakti (Army)
  • Exercise Varuna (Navy)
  • Exercise Garuda (Air Force)
  • Recently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has inducted French Rafale multi-role combat aircraft.
  • India entered into a contract with a French firm to build six Scorpene submarines in India’s Malegaon dockyards through a technology-transfer arrangement in 2005.
  • The two countries also signed the Agreement regarding the Provision of Reciprocal Logistics Support.

Airbus CEO Meets With Prime Minister Modi                  

  • On Wednesday, December 21, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury met with PM Modi and discussed various ways to make the country ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
  • In October of this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the C295 aircraft manufacturing facility, the country’s first aircraft manufacturing facility in the private sector, as part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ policies in the defence sector.
  • Guillaume Faury stated on this particular occasion, “We are honoured to be a part of this historic moment in Indian aerospace. Our Airbus teams are committed to helping the Indian Air Force modernise through the C295 programme, which will also help the country’s private defence manufacturing sector grow.”
  • The meeting between the world’s largest civil planemaker and the leader of the world’s fastest growing airline market also coincides with a potentially huge Air India jet purchase, though industry sources said this was not the main focus of the visit.
  • Air India is in the advanced stages of negotiating a major fleet renewal and expansion under new owner Tata Group that industry sources say could involve 250 Airbus jets including 200-210 A320neo-family jets and over three dozen A350s.
  • Airbus also hopes to secure a new home at Air India for six A350s originally earmarked for Russia’s Aeroflot, though it remains unclear whether these are included in the main order.
  • Air India is also close to a deal to buy some 190 Boeing 737 MAX jets and 30 of its 787 Dreamliners as part of the same package potentially close to 500 aircraft, Reuters reported last week. The deal could also involve a handful of larger 777X jets.
