The Ambassador emphasised that the presence of these two ships for the naval exercise demonstrates our strengthening defence relations with the UAE, which are led by our countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

INS Visakhapatnam, commanded by Captain Ashok Rao, is one of the Indian Navy’s largest operational destroyers and a totally indigenous warship built by Mazagaon Docks Limited. Captain Pramod G Thomas commands the NS Trikand, an advanced stealth frigate that was commissioned in 2013. The ship is a modern warship with cutting-edge technology interwoven into every aspect of its construction to make it more stable, stealthy, swift, and formidable.

India-UAE Relations

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and the UAE established diplomatic ties in 1972, with the UAE opening its Embassy in Delhi in 1972 and India opening its Embassy in Abu Dhabi in 1973. The traditionally strong bilateral relations between India and the UAE were boosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE on August 16-17, 2015, which marked the start of a new strategic relationship between the two countries.

Bilateral defence cooperation between India and the UAE has grown in tandem with other facets of the bilateral relationship. The two countries have had regular high-level and functional-level interactions. Both navies’ ships have conducted port calls on a regular basis to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.
