International Day Of Democracy
- In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September as the International Day of Democracy with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy and invited all member states and organizations to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.
- In September 1997, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) adopted a Universal Declaration on Democracy. That Declaration affirms the principles of democracy, the elements and exercise of democratic government, and the international scope of democracy.
Engineers’ Day Celebrated
- Every year on the 15th of September, India celebrates National Engineer’s Day to recognize and honour the achievements of the great engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
- The day is observed to commemorate the great work of engineers and to encourage them to improve and innovate.
- It is different from the World Engineer’s Day celebrated annually by UNESCO on 4th March.
- Born in Karnataka in 1861, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya studied a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Mysore and then studied civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune and went on to become one of the most eminent engineers in the country.
- He was an engineering pioneer of India whose work was reflected in harnessing water resources and building and consolidating dams across the country.
- His work was becoming so popular that the Government of India sent him to Aden (Yemen) to study water supply and drainage systems in 1906-07.
- He served as the Chief Engineer of Mysore State in 1909 and as the Diwan of the princely state of Mysore in 1912, a position he held for seven years.
- He was an Engineer who had planned the Indian Economy in 1934.
- He was awarded an Honorary Membership of the London Institution of Civil Engineers for an unbroken 50 years.
- And above everything, he was conferred India’s highest honor, the Bharat Ratna in 1955.
India Wins SAFF U-17 Championship Title
- In football, India clinched the SAFF under-17 Championship title, defeating Nepal 4-0 in the final in Colombo.
- In the group league, Nepal defeated India 3-1. However, in the final, India produced a clinical performance, to lift the title for the fourth time.
- India captain Vanlalpeka Guite was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while goalkeeper Sahil won the Best Goalkeeper awards.
2 Days National Meet On RTI Act
- Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh RK Mathur inaugurated a two-Day National Meet on RTI Act in Leh today, September 15. Standing Conference of Public Enterprises, SCOPE, has organized the Meet to discuss the Right To Information Act implementation in the Public Sector Enterprises in the country.
- Chief Information Commissioner Y K Sinha said that PSUs are efficiently implementing the RTI Act. He said that best practices, field-level knowledge, and feedback from 17 years of the RTI Act era, must be reported to the Parliament and the concerned Committees.
- SCOPE Director General Atul Sobti said, against the general perception, over 70 percent of PSUs are profit-making and contribute to 12 percent of the country’s GDP.
World Water Congress 2022
- India has launched a joint whitepaper on ‘Urban Wastewater Scenario in India’ with Denmark at World Water Congress and Exhibition 2022 in Copenhagen. Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat attended the event along with Danish Environment Minister Lea Wermelin.
- Mr. Shekhawat said that India has committed investments of more than 140 Billion dollars by 2024 in the water sector. The minister informed, with the help of community-centric approach, at least 10 percent of the funds are contributed by community in every program ensuring community ownership and participation.
- The whitepaper aims at holistically capturing the current status of wastewater treatment in India and potential pathways for future treatment structures, co-creation, and collaborations. This whitepaper is a result of the Indo-Danish Bilateral Green Strategic Partnership, which is focused on green hydrogen, renewable energy, and wastewater management.
BLO e-Patrika Launched
- The Election Commission today released a new digital publication ‘BLO e-Patrika’ at an interactive session held with Booth Level Officers BLOs spread across the States in India.
- Over 350 BLOs joined through videoconferencing from the office of Chief Electoral Officers CEOs in States and UTs and 50 BLOs from the nearby states Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi joined the launch event physically in New Delhi.
- The BLOs participated enthusiastically during the interaction with the Commission sharing their experiences, challenges they come across while performing their duties and success stories. Today’s event was a first-of-its-kind direct interaction by the Commission with the BLOs across the country.
Doordarshan Celebrates Its Foundation Day
- Doordarshan is an Indian public service broadcaster founded by the Government of India, owned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and one of Prasar Bharati’s two divisions.
- One of India’s largest broadcasting organizations in studio and transmitter infrastructure, it was established on 15 September 1959.
- Doordarshan, which also broadcasts on digital terrestrial transmitters, provides television, radio, online and mobile service throughout metropolitan and regional India and overseas.
Sardar Sarovar Dam Filled To Highest Capacity
- The Sardar Sarovar dam on the river Narmada, the lifeline of Gujarat was filled to its highest capacity, on September 15.
- The water level at the dam has reached the historic 138.68 meters today which is above the highest capacity of the dam. This is for the third time in history that the dam is filled to its highest capacity after 2019 and 2020.
- Following the good monsoon rainfall this year, the dam is filled to the brim after two years. The present 5.75 lakh crores liters of water stock in the dam has ensured that the state will not face water scarcity in the coming summer.
- The government said farmers in the command area of the dam can be provided water for rabi crops.
- The Sardar Sarovar dam is truly a lifeline of the state through which the water of River Narmada has reached around 4 crore population of the state.
