India has been preparing the basis for the formation of a fourth wing of its armed forces, which will entail the construction of a rocket force to serve as India’s principal tool for strategic nuclear deterrent and long/medium-range precision strikes with conventional missiles.
Does India Need More Subsonic Cruise Missiles?
The Indian Rocket Force has to be equipped with ballistic and cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear or conventional weapons. Over the previous two decades, India’s nuclear and conventional ballistic missile capabilities have considerably increased. While ICBMs are nuclear-armed, SRBMs and MRBMs are not, despite their nuclear capability.
India will buy 250 additional Pralay ballistic missiles for the services in order to fortify their northern borders. Pralay ballistic missiles are intended to be launched from mobile platforms, which increases tactical flexibility and mobility. They are capable of carrying a wide range of warheads, including conventional and nuclear payloads, and can be deployed both strategically and tactically. The Pralay missiles, with their superior guidance systems, can hit targets with pinpoint accuracy, making them a significant force multiplier for India’s defensive capabilities.
However, the Ukraine war demonstrated that high-end missiles are difficult to manufacture in a year-long military conflict and require time to replenish stocks that have already been used in the war, so it is critical that the inventory of Pralay and BrahMos missiles is not used on low-cost targets and is kept only for high-value targets.
In order to meet its requirements for low-tier missile systems Maheshwarastra 1&2 guided rocket system and subsonic cruise missile with ranges ranging from 500km to 2000km, India will need 4-5 different programs, specifically in different classes of weapons. For this, it will need to work with numerous private sector companies in the nation that can produce at a faster rate.
