What Are France’s Pension Reforms?

A Series Of Civil Unrest Incidents Began In France On 19 January 2023, Organised By Opponents Of The Pension Reform Bill Proposed By The Borne Government, Which Would Increase The Retirement Age From 62 To 64 Years Old.
In March, The Government Used Article 49.3 Of The Constitution To Force The Bill Through The French Parliament Sparking More Protests And Two Failed No-Confidence Votes, Contributing To An Increase In Violence In Protests.
The Constitutional Council Rejected Opposition Calls For A Referendum – But It Also Struck Out Some Aspects Of The Reforms, Citing Legal Flaws. Following The Council’s Ruling, Protesters Set Fires Across Paris, And 112 People Were Arrested.
Immediately French President Emmanuel Macron Signed Into Law His Government’s Highly Unpopular Pension Reforms, Which Raise The State Pension Age From 62 To 64.

How Is The Actual Situation?

Some 782,000 People Protested Across France, Including 112,000 In Paris Alone, The Interior Ministry. The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) Union Said It Counted 2.3 Million Protesters Across France, Including 550,000 In The Capital.
The Turnout Was Massively Higher Than May Day Last Year But Smaller Than The Biggest Protests Seen Against The Pension Reform This Year. The Movement Has Turned Into A Major Challenge To Macron Who Won A Second Term In Elections Last Year And Presents The Biggest Crisis Of His Second Mandate
Some 13,000 Police Deployed Nationwide On Tuesday After Last Thursday Saw The Most Violent Clashes Yet Between Protesters And Security Forces. French Police Have Been Accused Of Using Excessive Force – Both By Protesters And Rights Bodies – And This Has Further Fuelled The Anger Of Demonstrators.
