Two units of the Indian Air Force’s Garud Special Forces have been deployed in the Kashmir valley for counter-terrorism operations, as well as speciality missions in the Eastern Ladakh region.
Garud Special Forces in the Past
Garud special forces conducted a number of counter-terrorism operations in the Kashmir valley. The Garud Special Forces of the Indian Air Force were initially stationed in the valley in 2007 and 2009 and redeployed in 2017, according to the Commanding Officer of a Garud unit in an exclusive engagement.
According to him, the personnel were also deployed during the 2017 China-India border conflict, popularly known as the Doklam stalemate. Doklam is a region shared by India, Bhutan, and China. The Doklam plateau problem came to the fore in 2017 when Chinese forces armed with construction vehicles and road-building equipment began expanding an existing road southward in Doklam.
“Garud Forces have undertaken various operations in the valley and have also achieved a lot of success by eliminating a number of terrorists,” stated a commander of the Garud Special Force. Currently, two teams, along with the Indian Army, are stationed here.” “The commander of the Special Forces recalled that the special forces were deployed in the valley in 2007 and 2009.” “Thereafter, they were redeployed in 2017,” he explained.
“We have had a lot of success because of our rigorous training.” “Three Garuds were also lost in these operations,” he added. The commander went on to say that the special forces had received one Ashok Chakra, five Shaurya Chakras, and four Gallantry decorations.
“The forces are also operating in hilly terrain and urban terrain.” “We’ve also been deployed in higher altitudes,” he added. On the role of Garuds during the impasse on the Eastern and Northern Fronts, he stated, “Garuds have been continuously deployed there since the 2017 China-India border standoff.”
