Lt Gen Virendra Vats Assumed The Appointment Of Commandant Of DSSC 

  • Lt Gen Virendra Vats assumed the appointment of Commandant, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington on September 01, 2022. On taking over reins of the historic tri-services institution, he complimented the faculty & staff for excellent standards of training & administration.
  • The DSSC is a defence service training institution of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
  • It trains officers of all three services of the Indian Armed Forces – (Indian Military Service, Indian Naval Service, IAF Service), selected officers from the Paramilitary forces and the Civil Services and officers from friendly foreign countries for command and staff appointments.
  • From modest beginnings in 1947, the College today boasts of a well earned global reputaion and many laurels for excellence. BSF Gets New Indian-Made Anti-drone Guns  

  • The Border Security Force has deployed anti-drone guns in the Punjab region of India and Jammu intending to detect and stop drones nearing the border. There have been at least 200 sightings of drones in the past two years.
  • Border security Force is procuring both handheld and mobile guns that can be fixed on a vehicle roof that are currently being tested. The National Technical Research Organisation is currently studying the frequency drones use to contact their controllers so they can be jammed.
  • Anti-drone technology system provided for both ‘soft-kill’ and ‘hard-kill’ options. It has the capability to both detect and destroy drones in the air. The system can detect and jam drones from up to 3 km and by using a laser, it can bring down a target from up to 2 km depending on the wattage of the laser weapon. It has a radar detection range of 4km, a jamming range of more than 2km and a kill range of more than a kilometer.
  • The BSF guards 198 km of the 553-km-long international border and LoC with Pakistan.

ISRO Demonstrates New Technology  

  • ISRO successfully demonstrated a new technology with Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator that it said is a game-changer with multiple applications for future missions including to Mars and Venus.
  • An IAD, designed and developed by ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, was successfully test flown, on Saturday, in a ‘Rohini’ sounding rocket from Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station.
  • At around 84 km altitude, the IAD was inflated and it descended through atmosphere with the payload part of sounding rocket. The pneumatic system for inflation was developed by ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC).

India-Japan 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue In Tokyo  

  • The Defence and Foreign ministers of India and Japan held the second 2+2 ministerial where they had a discussion on the regional and global issues of mutual interests and concerns, particularly those in the Indo-Pacific as well as Ukraine.
  • The Ministers highlighted their commitment to a common strategic goal of achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific, that is inclusive and resilient, based on the rule of law and free from coercion.
  • They also reiterated their strong support for ASEAN’s unity and centrality and their full support for the “ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP)” which upholds the principles such as the rule of law, openness, freedom, transparency and inclusiveness.
  • The Ministers welcomed the participation of Japan for the first time in the multilateral exercise MILAN. The Ministers expressed their commitment to continuing bilateral and multilateral exercises including “Dharma Guardian”, JIMEX and “Malabar.”

DRDO & Indian Army Successfully Conducted Six Flight-tests of QRSM  

  • DRDO and Indian Army have successfully completed six flight-tests of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system from Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur off the Odisha coast. The flight tests were conducted as part of evaluation trials by the Indian Army.
  • The performance of the system has been confirmed from the data captured by a number of Range instruments like Telemetry, Radar and Electro Optical Tracking Systems deployed by ITR. Senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Army participated in the launches.
  • During these tests, all the mission objectives were met establishing pin-point accuracy of the weapon system with state-of-the-art guidance and control algorithms including warhead chain. The performance of the system has been confirmed from the data captured by a number of Range instruments like Telemetry, Radar and Electro Optical Tracking Systems (EOTS) deployed by ITR. Senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Army participated in the launches.
  • These tests were conducted in the final deployment configuration consisting of all indigenously-developed sub-systems, including the missile with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, mobile launcher, fully automated command and control system, surveillance and multi-function Radars. The uniqueness of the QRSAM weapon system is that it can operate on the move with search and track capability & fire on short halt. This has been proven during the mobility trials conducted earlier.
  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has complimented DRDO and Indian Army on the successful flight trials. He exuded confidence that the QRSAM weapon system will be an excellent force multiplier for the Armed Forces.
  • Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO has congratulated the teams associated with the successful series of trials and said that the system is now ready for induction into the Indian Army.

Iran Signs Formal MoU To Join SCO  

  • Iran has signed a memorandum of commitment to join the SCO, giving a boost to India’s focus on an inclusive connectivity agenda in the Eurasian region that would function parallel to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Iran will attend the SCO as a full member from the Summit to be hosted by India in 2023.
  • Iran’s entry into the SCO will boost India’s Eurasian outreach ensuring seamless coordination between India and Iran and Eurasian states besides Russia. India also maintains that entry of Iranian oil into the market will address global energy security to some extent.
  • Ahead of the SCO Summit, there has been a flurry of engagements between New Delhi and Tehran with a focus on strengthening connectivity mechanisms, especially the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and Chabahar Port.
  • A successful training launch of a Short-Range Ballistic Missile, Prithvi-II was carried out on June 15, 2022 at approximately 1930 hrs from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha. The missile is a proven system and is capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision.
  • Agni:  India carried out a successful training launch of Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-3 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha in November. It was part of routine user training launches carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.
  • Agni: The launch was carried out for a predetermined range and validated all operational parameters of the system. Earlier, in June, a successful training launch Agni-4 was carried out.
  • Helina:  In April, indigenously-developed helicopter launched Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ was successfully flight tested twice at different high-altitude ranges as part of user validation trials. The flight-tests were jointly conducted by DRDO, Indian Army and IAF. The flight trials were conducted from an ALH and the missile was fired successfully engaging simulated tank target.
  • Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missile:  Indigenously developed Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) were successfully test-fired from MBT Arjun by DRDO and Indian Army at KK Ranges with support of Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) Ahmednagar in Maharashtra on August 04, 2022.
  • The all-indigenous Laser Guided ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour protected armoured vehicles. The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun.
  • Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile:  Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Army have successfully completed six flight-tests of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system from Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur off the Odisha coast.
  • Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile:  DRDO successfully flight tested the final deliverable configuration of MPATGM on January 11, 2022.  The indigenously developed anti-tank missile is a low weight, fire & forget missile and is launched from a man portable launcher, integrated with thermal sight.
  • The missile impacted the designated target and destroyed it. The final impact event was captured on camera and the test has validated the minimum range successfully.

Siachen Glacier, The World’s Highest Battlefield Gets Satellite Broadband For Troops  

  • The Indian Army has achieved a great success in the world’s highest battlefield i.e. Siachen. Due to the unprecedented move of the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps Siachen Signalers, now the world’s highest battlefield i.e., Siachen Glacier will also have internet facility.
  • Siachen Signalers have activated satellite-based internet service on the Siachen Glacier (19,061 ft), the world’s highest battlefield.
  • It is worth noting that the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps Siachen Signalers is responsible for security in the world’s highest battlefield Siachen.

Defence Manufacturer Saab To Produce Carl-Gustaf M4 Weapons System In India  

  • Swedish defence products company Saab will manufacture its Carl-Gustaf M4 weapons system in India. According to Gorgen Johannson, Senior Vice President at Saab, production in its new facility in India is expected to start in 2024. However, he declined to provide detail on the investment that the company is likely to make in the facility.
  • The new facility will support its production as well as components for users of the system around the world, the company said.
  • The Carl-Gustaf M4 is a recoilless rifle that has been ordered by the Indian armed forces. There’s been an increased interest in the weapon system, which can be used against tanks, since the conflict in Ukraine.
  • “The Carl-Gustaf M4 can be fitted with a wide range of sights to ensure maximum effect in any tactical situation and flexibility for the user. The system is attached with standard clip-on telescopic sight, with additional options, including open sight, red dot sight and advanced fire control devices, available.

Army Aviation Inducts 1st Indigenous LCH 

  • The Indian Army formally inducted the indigenous LCH. The first LCH was formally received by DG Army Aviation Lt Gen A. K. Suri from HAL in Bengaluru.
  • The Army raised its first LCH Unit on June 01, 2022, in Bengaluru to prepare for the induction. As reported by The Hindu earlier, the Unit will move to the Eastern Command along the LAC on completion next year.
  • The Army plans to acquire 95 LCH of which seven units, each having 10 helicopters, are to be deployed for combat role in mountains.

Military Nursing Service Celebrates Its 97th Raising Day

  • With commemorating the illustrious stories of courage, compassion and care, MNS celebrated its 97th Raising Day on 01 Oct 2022.
  • To commemorate the occasion, Major General Smita Devrani, Additional DG of MNS laid wreaths at the National War Memorial and paid tributes to medical personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
  • MNS is the only all women corps of the Armed Forces  dating back to the year 1888, the first batch of 10 qualified British nurses arrived in Bombay to organize  nursing in the military hospitals in India. It was designated as Indian Army Nursing Services in 1893 and Queen Alexandria MNS of India (QAMNS {I}) in 1902.

Paramilitary Force, Border Police Force Get New Chiefs

  • Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Sujoy Lal Thaosen and Anish Dayal Singh have been appointed as the new Director Generals of the CRPF and ITBP respectively, a government order said.
  • Sujoy Lal Thaosen, a 1988-batch officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is currently working as the director general (DG) of the border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and holding the additional charge of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
  • Thaosen is scheduled to retire in November next year, while Singh will superannuate in December, 2024.
  • The order for their appointment was issued by the Personnel Ministry after sanction from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the prime minister.
  • The CRPF is the country’s largest paramilitary with an estimated strength of about 3.25 lakh personnel. It is designated as the lead internal security force with its main operational theatres being Left Wing Extremism-affected states, counter-terrorist combat in the Kashmir valley, and counter-insurgency operations in the north east.
  • The ITBP is primarily tasked to guard the 3,488 km stretch of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China apart from rendering a variety of duties in the internal security domain of the country.
  • The SSB is the border force that guards fenceless Indian borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

DRDO Tests 3 Unmanned Remote-controlled Weaponised Boats In Pune

  • Ahead of the premier defence exhibition DefExpo-2022, DRDO officials in Maharashtra tested three remotely unmanned, weaponised boats in Pune on Thursday. These three remote-controlled armed boats were tested with no man on the vessel.
  • While talking to the media after testing three boats, DRDO R&D Establishment Group Director PM Naik said, “With no human on the vessel, the video feed will be transferred to the ground control station. It will be useful for surveillance.”
  • Moreover, the boats have an endurance of about four hours and currently they can sail at a maximum speed of 10 nautical miles/hour and this can be further increased to 25 nautical miles. Some variants of these boats use an electric propulsion system with lithium batteries, while others have a petrol engine on board.

  • The 73rd Raising Day of TA was celebrated across the country on 09 Oct 2022 to commemorate its raising by the first Governor General Shri C Rajagopalachari on this day in 1949.

Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army Conducts An Integrated Exercise At 17,500 Feet In North Sikkim

  • The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps (XXXIII Corps) conducted an integrated exercise called ‘SINGHEE PRAHAAR’ in a high-altitude area of 17,500 feet in North Sikkim on Sunday, October 9.
  • The battlefield scenario has changed even in high-altitude areas like North Sikkim, thanks to the infusion of technology and increasing lethality and ranges of weapon platforms available.
  • According to reports, future battles are likely to be swift, intense, and under extreme battlefield transparency and digitised environment, despite being dizzy between 17,000 feet and 22,000 feet, at subzero temperatures, and lack of oxygen.

India-Russia Joint Venture Hopes For $5 Bn In Supersonic Missile Exports By 2025

  • India has made Russian MiG fighter planes and Su-30 jets under licence and the two have collaborated to make BrahMos missiles in India. Russia has also traditionally been India’s main arms supplier.
  • “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a target of achieving $5 billion (in defence exports) by 2025. I hope BrahMos themselves will be able to reach the $5 billion target by 2025“.
  • The joint venture, with a 50.5% Indian and 49.5% Russian partnership, fits into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship make-in-India programme.

Armenia To Get Pinaka Rockets, Nigeria, Indonesia Too Shown Interest

  • Indian defence firm Solar group on Tuesday said they had bagged orders from Armenia for the Pinaka rockets manufactured indigenously.
  • “The life and range of upgraded Pinaka rocket launchers are more than their previous version despite the price being almost the same. We have received an export order from Armenia which is to be completed within two years,” Solar Group chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal said.
  • India had earlier tasted success in the export sector in Armenia when it transferred the indigenously developed Swathi weapon locating radar to that country. Pinaka has also received a boost from its own orders from the Indian Army which is looking at inducting a large number of regiments of these rockets under the artillery.

Indian Army Celebrates 76th Infantry Day

  • Infantry Day is commemorated on 27 October every year to acknowledge the contributions of Infantry, the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army. This day has a unique significance for the Nation, as it was on this day in 1947 that Infantry-men from the Indian Army became the first troops to land at Srinagar airport.
  • As part of the Infantry Day celebrations of 2022, a ‘Wreath Laying’ ceremony was organised at the National War Memorial today to honour the heroes of Infantry, who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the Nation. Gen Anil Chauhan, Lt Gen BS Raju, laid wreaths on this solemn occasion.

ISRO Is Ramping Up Its Efforts To Build Its Own Space Station By 2035

  • As India eyes setting up its own space station by 2035, the ISRO has proposed to the industry to collaborate with it in developing a reusable rocket capable of carrying heavier payloads into orbit.
  • Dubbed as the Next-Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), ISRO Chairman S Somanath said the space agency was working on the design of the rocket and would like the industry to collaborate with it in the development.
  • “The intent is to bring industry along in the development process. All the money need not be invested by us. We want the industry to invest to create this rocket for all of us,” Somanath told PTI here. He said the rocket is planned to carry a 10-tonne payload in the Geostationary Transfer Orbit or 20 tonnes to the low earth orbit.

DRDO Conducts Successful Maiden Flight-test of Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence interceptor

  • DRDO conducted a successful maiden flight-test of Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence interceptor AD-1 missile with large kill altitude bracket from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on November 02, 2022. The flight-test was carried out with participation of all BMD weapon system elements located at different geographical locations.
  • The AD-1 is a long-range interceptor missile designed for both low exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception of long-range ballistic missiles as well as aircraft. It is propelled by a two-stage solid motor and equipped with indigenously-developed advanced control system, navigation and guidance algorithm to precisely guide the vehicle to the target.

In a First, ISRO Supplies Rocket System to Support a Private Launch Vehicle

  • The ISRO has for the first time supplied a rocket system to support a private launch vehicle built in the country. Chennai-based space technology startup Agnikul Cosmos received its first flight termination system (FTS) on November 7 from ISRO.
  • With the support of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), a single-window autonomous government agency to promote, permit, and oversee private sector space-based activities.
  • “This also marks the first time that a system that has been used for ISRO’s vehicles is being supplied for supporting a private launch vehicle built in India. The package will be used for their fully controlled sub-orbital launcher, scheduled to launch from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota,” it said.

DRDO Operationalised First Avalanche Radar In North-East Himalaya

  • DRDO has successfully installed an Avalanche Radar, which is claimed to be a first of its kind in India. The radar is capable of monitoring critical avalanche prone slopes even during inclement weather.
  • Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), Chandigarh led the research initiative to develop critical technologies for enhancing combat effectiveness and safe movement of troops in all kinds of terrain with a focus on avalanches and landslides.
  • DGRE also collaborated with 33 Corps of the Indian Army to jointly conduct the installation and launch of the state-of the-art Doppler Avalanche Radar at an altitude of 15000 ft in North Sikkim region. As per the information from DGRE, it involved an Indian Industry partner.

First Private Launchpad & Mission Control Center Established In ISRO Campus At SDSC, SHAR

  • A private launchpad and mission control center is established within the ISRO campus at Satish Dhawan Space Center, SHAR, Sriharikota, for the first time. The launchpad is designed and operated by a private company, an Indian space-tech start-up, Agnikul.
  • The facility was inaugurated on November 25, 2022, by S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO & Secretary, Department of Space. S. Somanath expressed pleasure over the establishment of the first private launch pad in the country and endorsed that, now, India can travel to space from one more space platform.
  • Agnikul Cosmos Private Limited is a Chennai-based start-up incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras). It was founded in 2017 by Srinath Ravichandran, Moin SPM & Prof. SR Chakravarthy (from IIT Madras). Agnikul aims to make space accessible and affordable.

  • The 12th Edition of Exercise Agni Warrior, a bilateral exercise between the Singapore & Indian Army, which commenced on 13 November 2022 concluded at Field Firing Ranges, Devlali (M.H.) on 30 November 2022. Exercise Agni Warrior, involved showcasing joint firepower planning, execution and use of New Generation Equipment by the Artillery arm of both armies.
  • Exercise also included participation by both sides in a joint computer war-game as part of joint planning process. Both sides utilised niche technology and Artillery Observation Simulators as part of joint training phase. Expert academic discussions were conducted on modern trends in Artillery and refinement of Artillery planning process.

Idukki Airstrip Getting Ready; Trial Landing Of Aircraft Carried Out

  • The National Cadet Corps’ (NCC) first and only airstrip in the country is getting ready to receive small aircrafts for the training purpose of its air wing cadets. A successful trial landing of a two-seater Virus SW-80 aircraft was carried out at the airstrip built in this hill district on Thursday.
  • After the successful trial run, the officials said a necessary report will be submitted to the authorities and based on it they will take further decisions on commencing the training for NCC air wing cadets.
  • Construction of a 650-metre-long runway, a hangar for parking four small aircraft and a training facility for 50 cadets including accommodation has already been completed. The completion of the airstrip has given wings to the dreams of the hill district prone to ecological disasters.

Country’s First Infantry Museum To Be Inaugurated In Mhow

  • The country’s first infantry museum inaugurated in Mhow cantonment in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh on December 16. Final preparations are underway in Mhow cantonment for the inauguration of the Infantry Research Centre and Museum.
  • The museum inaugurated on December 16 and will be thrown open to the public from December 17.
  • The construction of the museum has been completed and final touches are being given to the building and the surrounding garden.
  • The museum will showcase Infantry Corps’ history from 1747 to 2020, in which the sacrifice of valour and valiant soldiers have been preserved in statues, murals and photo galleries.

  • The newly-inaugurated Mopa International Airport in Goa has been named after former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
  • With the aim of boosting air connectivity and tourism in the coastal state, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mopa International Airport in Goa on Sunday.
  • Developed at a cost of around Rs 2,870 crore, the airport is built on the theme of sustainable infrastructure. PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the airport in November 2016.

Night Trials Of Agni-5 Nuclear-capable Ballistic Missile

  • India successfully carried out the night trials of the nuclear-capable Agni-5 ballistic missile, which can hit targets beyond 5,000 km on Thursday.
  • “The test was carried out to validate new technologies and equipment on the missile which is now lighter than before. The trial has proved the capability to enhance the range of the Agni-5 missile, if required,” sources said.
  • Sources said the missile has been made lighter by adding lighter composite material which will enable the missile to go longer ranges. India had launched the last Agni-5test in October 2021.

Indian Forces Acquiring ‘Pralay’ Ballistic Missile For Striking Targets At 150-500 Km 

  • Amid the ongoing conflict with China, the Indian armed forces are now going to acquire the ‘Pralay’ ballistic missile which can hit targets from 150 to 500 Kms.
  • The proposal moved by the Indian defence forces is at an advanced stage and is scheduled to be taken up for clearance during a high-level meeting this week.
  • With a range of 150 to 500 km, ‘Pralay’ is powered with solid propellant rocket motor and other new technologies. The missile guidance system includes state-of-the-art navigation and integrated avionics.

India Clears Defence Purchase Plan Worth Rs 84,328 Crore

  • India’s Defence Acquisition Council has approved proposals to acquire defence equipment, including infantry combat vehicles, light tanks and missile systems, worth Rs 84,328 crore, the defence minister Rajnath Singh said.
  • Of the total, more than 97% of the procurement will be from indigenous sources.
  • “The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Rajnath Singh, has accorded approval for Acceptance of Necessity for 24 Capital Acquisition Proposals,” said the defence ministry.
  • These proposals include six for Indian Army, six for Indian Air Force, 10 for Indian Navy and two for Indian Coast Guard for a total value of Rs 84,328 crore, it said.
  • Notably, 21 proposals worth Rs 82,127 crore (97.4%), are approved for procurement from indigenous sources.

India Assumes Wassenaar Arrangement Chairmanship On Jan 1, 2023

  • Ahead of India assuming Chairmanship of Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) Plenary starting January 1, 2023, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar is visiting Austria.  He will also have a meeting with the Director General of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi.
  • The Wassenaar Arrangement’s secretariat is located in its capital Vienna and India will hold the Chairmanship for one year. Dr Jaishankar will be on an official visit from January 1-3, 2023.
  • The Wassenaar Arrangement is a voluntary export control regime. The Arrangement, formally established in July 1996, has 42 members who exchange information on transfers of conventional weapons and dual-use goods and technologies.
  • It has 42 member states comprising mostly NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and EU states.
