India Clears Pralay Tactical Ballistic Missiles For Armed Forces

  • In a major decision, the Defence Ministry has cleared the procurement of around 120 Pralay ballistic missiles for the Indian armed forces that will deploy them along the borders with China and Pakistan.
  • At present, the Pralay ballistic missiles can take out targets from 150 to 500 kms and are extremely difficult to intercept for the enemy through interceptor missiles.
  • The missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation is being further developed and its range can be extended significantly if the forces want it.
  • ‘Pralay’ is a quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile. The advanced missile has been developed in a way to be able to defeat interceptor missiles. It has the ability to change its path after covering a certain range in midair.
  • The proposal has been cleared at the Defence Ministry level and has paved the way for manufacturing and induction into the armed forces.
  • Defence watchers say such a missile system can be used for taking out long-range enemy air defence systems and also other high-value installations and weaponry.
  • The proposal to induct these missiles has been cleared at a time when the defence forces are working towards creating a dedicated rocket force which can take out enemy targets from long range. The Chinese military already has a dedicated rocket force.

G20 Meet In Srinagar Shows Return Of Peace, Security In J-K

  • The central government would conduct one of the G20 meetings in Jammu & Kashmir’s Srinagar in 2023 which advocates for the return of peace and security in the Union Territory.
  • India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1. During its presidency, India will host more than 200 meetings in more than 50 cities across 32 different workstreams.
  • The top event of the G20 leader’s summit is slated to be held in the national capital on September 9 and 10, 2023, while 200 other events will take place in different parts of the country.
  • Another factor which can be credited for the selection of Srinagar as a venue for G20 meeting is the footfall of around 1.62 crore tourists to the Union Territory in the last 11 months, which is the highest since Independence.
  • The people of Kashmir responding positively to change in J-K’s status quo encouraged New Delhi to expedite the development process in the Union Territory. The projects that were in limbo for the past many years have been completed and the foundations of many new projects have been laid.

Indian Army Inducts THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV)

  • As per the Indian Governments import list for this year, the Indian Army has procured unspecified numbers of Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System (THeMIS) unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) from Estonia-based Milrem Robotics.
  • THeMIS Combat UGVs provide direct fire support for maneuver forces and act as a force multiplier. With an integrated self-stabilizing remote-controlled weapon system, they provide high precision over wide areas, day and night, increasing stand-off distance, force protection and survivability. Combat UGVs can be equipped with light or heavy machine guns, 40 mm grenade launchers, 30 mm autocannons and Anti-Tank Missile Systems.

Their main purpose is to increase situational awareness and provide improved intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance over wide areas and battle damage assessment capability. The system can effectively enhance the work of dismounted infantry units, border guards and law enforcement agencies to collect and process raw information and decrease the reaction time for commanders.

Indian Army honours Maj Ralengnao Khathing With A Bust At Yangste In Tawang

  • In a significant move, the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps unveiled a bust of Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing at Yangste in the Tawang Sector of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. This is close to where a scuffle between Indian Army soldiers and personnel of China’s PLA occurred on December 9.
  • According to a tweet by the Tezpur-based Gajraj or IV Corps under the Army’s Eastern Command, the bust was unveiled at an altitude of 16,000 feet by Corps commander Lt Gen DS Rana.
  • A few people know of Maj Khathing – India’s first diplomat from the tribal community. It was in 1950 that Maj Khathing, then in charge of the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), took over the Tawang region and the Bum La area and formally incorporated them with India. NEFA is what Arunachal Pradesh was called at that time.
  • It was then that Maj Khathing took administrative control of Tawang and Bum La. He was the security commissioner of NEFA during the 1962 Sino-India War. He also served as the Chief Civil Liaison Officer of the IV Corps (Gajraj Corps) and was instrumental in the birth of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). In 1972, he was appointed Indian Ambassador to Myanmar (then Burma).
  • He became the first person from the tribal community to become an Ambassador. He was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. Maj Khathing passed away at Mantripukhri, Manipur in 1990.
