6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Nepal Rescue, Relief Operations On
Why In News
- At least 128 people were killed and over 100 injured as rescuers searched mountain villages after a strong earthquake of 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal. Officials added that the toll was expected to rise, noting that communications were cut off in many places.
Earthquake’s Epicenter
- The epicentre of the earthquake was identified as Ramidanda in Jajarkot district in Nepal, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
- The earthquake was so huge that tremors were felt not only in Kathmandu and surrounding districts but also in the Delhi-NCR region, which is around 500 kilometres from the quake’s epicentre.
Rescue Operations
- Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ headed towards the incident site with a medical team Saturday morning.
- Both Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel have been mobilised to carry out rescue works, officials said. Communications were cut off at many places in Nepal.
Earthquakes In Nepal
- On October 3, a series of earthquakes, the strongest – being magnitude 6.2, jolted Nepal in quick succession with tremors reverberating through parts of North India including the Delhi-NCR area.
- A year back, in November 2022, six people were killed after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Doti district. It was among a series of quakes that jolted the country.
- A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 killed more than 12,000 people and damaged about 1 million structures in the mountainous country.
What Caused the Nepal Earthquake?
- The India tectonic plate moving north at about 45mm a year is pushing under the Eurasian plate beneath the Himalayas.
- Two tectonic plates meet beneath the Himalayas along a fault line. Over time that is how the Himalayas were created.
- Nepal lies on a major geological faultline where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, forming the Himalayas, and earthquakes are a regular occurrence.
India’s Say
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed anguish over the loss of lives and damage caused by an earthquake in Nepal and asserted that India stands in solidarity with its neighbouring country and is ready to extend all possible assistance.
